I’m Gonna Live My Life Like a Jimmy Buffet Song

And this is THE problem....

life on a rock is NOT like exactly like stepping into a Jimmy Buffett (or Kenny Chesney) song. Although, living on the rock it is what you make it and can offer certain people a beautiful lifestyle, it simply is NOT the way most believe it should be when they were dreaming it and you need to understand that.

Thats why you MUST do a PMV (pre move visit) if you have never lived on an island. You hear the songs, see the movies, create visions in your mind of how you "believe" it will be, and you convince yourself that YOU are different than the others who dreamed, moved down before you, and then left after struggling to find that "special" place in life that is different than the life they were trying to escape from.

You rationalize and justify the WHY you want to live on a rock as the people on these forums struggle to warn you, they hint or sometimes outright throw honesty in your face. But you ONLY hear what suits your drive and motivation.

I believe it requires a solid 3-4 week stay in a local house with a weekly budget similar to what your income (on island) will be. Start from scratch and see how you enjoy life in a similar home that you will be staying in.

Actually, you cannot even simulate the issues of REALLY moving down and getting everything set up and trying to deal with the local people and their ways...if your time is important and you really need something, you need to understand how it REALLY works when it's all about you, and nobody cares.

What i am trying to say is make sure you invest some time up front to make sure the island life is something you can deal with as its NEVER the same as the movies or songs...unless you are on vacation.

Think about this. You don't want to spend too much money or take off too much work doing your PMV as you are saving up for this remarkable lifestyle that can only be found in a old movie or song...but what if you spend your life savings making this move and it turns into your worst nightmare?

I am guessing that 8 (probably 9) out of 10 people who make the move, find out that its nothing like they expected.

Oh, FCUK Kenny Chesney. He's done more to f-up STJ than all the white people building out the locals combined.

:"Oh, I don't want to be bothered on vay-cay." Boo hoo, Kenny. Than don't make a FREAKING ALBUM ABOUT YOUR ISLAND HOUSE!

Wow Iris. Good post Mosquiitobait. I often wonder if I did finally make the move to one of the islands then what would I have to look forward to? I believe one of the things that make my visits so special is the planning and anticipation. Also, would I stop listening to my Kenny Chesney Albums. LOL. Then again maybe I would start writing my own songs or perhaps a book, all for my own pleasure and not for public consumption of course. I guess I will never really know until I finally make the move. I don't have a problem with moving back if things do not not turn out like I had thought or if I decide maybe I might want to live elsewhere. What really is the harm of moving somewhere for even just a year? I just know it will not be on a snow covered mountain but then again maybe I'll learn to ski. 🙂 Make it a good day everyone.

Geez Iris...whats with the hate on for Kenny Chesney?

Now that you've thrown it out there, what specifically has he done to f-up STJ so bad?

Your fans want to know!

It's really nice to load up on the car ferry and spend a well deserved day off on STJ. Paddle boarding some of the quiet beaches, snorkeling some of the great spots. I really like hiking the trails and looking at the ruins of past history. It brings to mind what some people would do to others just to make a profit. When listening to some of Kenny Chesney's music I understand some of what he saw on STJ, especially the earlier songs. Some of the exposure however has not worked out that well. It has certainly brought a group with a superior but worthless attitude that many of the long time islanders and locals find hard to stomach at times. Kenny's fault, nah not at all, just a reaction to heart felt moments brought too music. Like every other thing, it will pass

Very sorry to hear that Gumbo. I simply can not understand why anyone would have such an attitude about anything. The Islands or anywhere in the universe for that matter have been here long before us and long after we all will be forgotten. This world wherever we chose to live is a gift we all should appreciate without attitudes. To those who do have an attitude I simply offer a big smile 🙂

I can assure you there are a lot of places (and people) who would enjoy the opportunity (and $$$) that KC brings to the island. Life's too short to let something like this be an issue - enjoy the beauty of the caribbean and be thankful for the life you live.

Peace

I can assure you that is most certainly what I do. We are all for the most part very thankful for the tourists and the money they spend. The lazy, loser, scumbags contribute little other than a poor work ethic and a steady sale of $1 Coors lights.
