Well ,
After many hours on line and phone calls and faxes I now have a understanding of the world of hurricane shutters.
You pay for ease of putting them up and down. The roll up shutters come in extruded aluminum with or without power assist. The colors are limited to white, tan and bronze. Most of the quotes have been running about $40.00 per square foot of window or door opening.
The companies on St. Croix are about the same price as the companies off island. The mainland prices do not include shipping, so the price on island from local suppliers are better. I like to shop on island when it makes sense.Anybody have rolldown shutters installed this year?
With hurricane season only a few months away I guess its time to place my order. The quotes have been 4 to 6 weeks for order time to install date.
$20,000.00 to do my 1,800 square foot house with roll up shutters.I wasn't ready to spend that much money, but I want to protect my house and I want my wife to be able to close up the house by herself if I'm not around.Anybody done shutters and have any ideas?

We got electric rollups for two large openings on second floor. Were expensive, bought them on stx, worth every penny. You really get spoiled. I close them to varying levels if it looks like rain and I'm going to work, or if it's really windy, and of course when we leave island. Easier to hit the switch when a shower comes than run and shut 7 windows, too. The more you use them the better for the mechanism. Breeze still comes in through the air holes. We're building a new house and will use them on selected windows, some electric and some manual, along with accordions on other openings.
