Hurricane Questions from an Island Newbie
I'm starting to look into portable solar power units as a possibility.. It looks like you can get a system for about $200-$300. I don't think it'd replace a generator; but, when not using lots of power (like overnight) it might be a nice way to give the generator a break (unless you have the fridge on) and keep cell phones and batteries charged and run a laptop and cable modem for a few hours.
Anyone know if internet would be restored before phone service (cell or land line)? If so, then Vonage (or other IP phone) phone service might also be attractive.

Depends on the storm. I do not think many people had Internet in 95. But i was without power for 6 months, cable and phone for over a year. If you have wireless i guess it would depend on if the tower went down?
Thanks to everyone who has responded so far. I at least FEEL like i'm better prepared.
You know, feeling and being prepared is about the best way to relieve the stress that H - season brings for us here--- do the best you can ahead of time - be aware - don't overreact to rumors and make a plan that suits your needs and no matter what the weather you can have some peace of mind.
