Humane Society to Host Annual ‘Doggie Ball’
The Humane Society of St. Thomas will host its annual fundraiser, the elegant Valentine Ball, Feb. 15 at the St. Peter Mountain Greathouse, with cocktails at 7 p.m. followed by dinner at 8.
Affectionately known as the "Doggie Ball," this year promises a fun and festive evening celebrating the theme "Flying Down to Rio."
What makes this year special is an official goodbye to veterinarian Andy Williamson, who retired last fall after 50 years of service to the island's animal community. Williamson is one of the founders of the Humane Society.
The society celebrated its first year of operations at the Humane Care Campus this year. According to board members, it has been a banner year. The society has found more homes for animals than any time in its history.
However, it has had more animals in it care than ever before – consistently between 200 and 250 animals that require food, shelter and medical attention each day. The reality is that better facilities and care for more animals translates to increased operating costs, the board says.
The facility's No Flea Boutique has been a healthy source of revenue year round and, in its spiffy new quarters, it is doing a good business.
The biggest fundraiser of the year, however, is the Doggie Ball. The board urges everyone to "come out, enjoy yourself and take pride in the fact that you make a huge difference by supporting and befriending our animals in need."
Tickets are $150 per person. They can be purchased at MSI Building Supplies, Style a Dog in Crown Bay Marina and the Chamber of Commerce.
