Nine dogs face euthanasia if they do not get adopted from the Humane Society of St. Thomas shelter by Tuesday, and 16 others have been delayed in leaving the islands for stateside adoption because of high temperatures, the society announced Saturday.

The Humane Society is looking for a private pilot or plane that will transport some of the animals to either New York or Boston, according to an announcement from Gerard Sperry.

The dogs are part of the 30/30 program, in which the Humane Society is attempting to get 30 dogs out of the shelter by June 30. The dogs involved have been at the shelter six months or more, putting strain on the shelter's resources.

Nine dogs were scheduled to fly out Friday to a facility in New York where they would be adopted, but the airline canceled the plan because the temperature was over the limit. According to shelter manager Rhea Vasconcellos, the airlines will not transport dogs if the temperature is higher than 85 degrees. Four times this week the thermometer has edged just over that mark, she said. The policy is for the health of the dogs.

Five of the dogs in the 30/30 program have been adopted, Vasconellos said, and 16 have been accepted at shelters in the states, if the St. Thomas shelter can get them there. The other nine need to be adopted by Tuesday, or on Wednesday the society "will have some hard choices to make."

Anyone willing to provide transit for the dogs or who wants to adopt one of them call the shelter at 340 775-0599. The dogs can be seen on the society's Facebook page, which can be seen here.

I escort a dog from the STX Shelter whenever I go north. This time of year it's small dogs -or cats- that can be carried in the cabin. Always met at the destination by the receiving shelter with no problems. Escorting animals is one of the easiest and most gratifying things you can do!

That's great Phizz!
Thanks for commenting on what a simple process it is.

Here's the Facebook link to HSSTT to see the remaining 10 that need transport or homes before they're euthanized on Tuesday.
Their time is running out!
