Is the island easily accessible without a car? Is there a public transport system? Is it reliable to get to work, stores etc?

Sara, which island are you looking at in your posts? STT, STJ or STX?

I think we are leaning towards St. Croix. We figure we will decide once we get there and feel all of the islands out first before we make a decision and talk to the locals and see what will be the best fit for us.

I grew up in St. Croix all my life and I can answer your questions. There is public transportation but it is very unreliable and inefficient. However, they do have 15 seat taxi vans that are reliable and cost $2 regardless of where you're going, but they only cover one specific route between Christiansted and Frederiksted (the two main towns). The usefulness of the taxis depend on where you live and where you're going. I used to have to walk a mile to catch a taxi, so I would only use them if I had something really important to go to, or if I had a ride to the bus stop. If I were you, I would buy a car, even if it was a piece-of-garbage car, because you will be very limited without one. I lived in St. Croix all my life (I'm 18 years old and go to college in Rhode Island now), so I know this first-hand. If you have any more questions, I'll be glad to answer them, and good luck with finding the perfect island for you. Living on St. Croix is a wonderful experience.
