How's the economy on your part of the island?
Just learned that one of St John's only mail pickup centers is about to shut down: http://barnako.typepad.com/news_of_st_john_usvi/2009/03/mail-center-may-close.html
There's noplace to park near Connections in Cruz Bay, the only other mail center on that side of the island, and there's a long waiting list for PO boxes at the island's only post office. It's one more business shutting down because times are hard... but it is going to affect a lot of residents' lives. Also at The Marketplace, home of one of St. John's two main supermarkets, the gym and vegetarian restaurant have closed -- rent is too high to make ends meet. They are not alone... many businesses are for sale, and many more are struggling...
What's going on elsewhere in the USVI? Are people working fewer hours than usual for this time of year? Small businesses on the brink? What does it look like "on the ground" where you are?
i think its slower than last year even with the cruise ships we have been getting. they dont seem to buy much just alot of looking. talked to a few owners downtown and business is slow for them too. im on stx
At least the Mail Center owner notified the boxholders that he was going to close. All too often here, you just go to pick up your mail & it's locked up. That's a real nightmare. I'm sorry he's having to close. In another couple of months it will get really bad here on STT (not that it's good right now). The commercial rents are ridiculous here. Pay cuts have started & jobs are going to be lost. It's really a shame.
Good news about the Mail Center -- a deal has been reached for new owners to take over the business. http://www.on-stjohn.com/2009/04/02/the-mail-center-stays-open/
I had 2 major accounts move out of STT.
I was worried, I was slow for a couple weeks, now it`s back to normal, 6 days a week, but not the big backlogs of years past!
I guess some business are somewhat unaffected & should be grateful.
