How to get to Annaly Bay?
Hi all! We've been on STX for almost a month now and we are having fun learning out way around the island. FOG posted a message quite a while back about some very cool rock formations you can get to by hiking west from Annaly Bay. This is exactly the kind of thing my husband and I love to do - hiking around on the rocks, exploring the lesser-traveled areas, etc. Ok, I know I'm new, but we've driven around trying to figure out how to get to Annaly Bay to start the hike but can't find it! We've asked several locals as well, and nobody seems to have any idea. The closest we came was a suggestion that it might be a hiking trail from the Carambola Beach Resort - is that it?
Hello Sharese,
Here is what Adam posted a few weeks back:
the easiest way to get to annaly bay is to drive to carambola resort and
park there. from there, you'll walk up to the tennis courts. keep on
that road with the courts on your left. just past the courts, there will
be a chain link fence starting on your right. when you see that fence, go
to the right of the fence off of the road. there is a small ravine there.
cross it up to the other side, and that's where the trail starts.
continue the trail up until the grass field (the grass will be as tall as
you are). once you cross the grass field, it splits to the left or right.
you can go either way, but i recommend going left. it's easier. when
you go to the left, you'll still be walking through the long grass, but
you'll come to some tree cover soon. keep going on that trail, walk under
the fallen tree and keep going again until you meet the dirt road. when
you reach the dirt road, take a right down to the beach. once you're at
the beach, you're basically there. just head left to the sharp rocks.
the pools are just around that corner. good luck. i recommend going
with someone and take plenty of drinking water.
the hike isn't too far... maybe a mile or two. takes about 30-45 minutes to hike to. coming back goes by a lot faster.
Hope you are in good shape. The trail head from Carombola is easy to miss - we started to miss it but a maintenance worker showed us the path. And that is all it is - just a slight parting of trees. But it is the NEATEST hike. Coming back is easier I thought. But Like Adam says when you get to the fork in the trail (in the grassy area) take the left path. It may be longer - you snake around, but it is definately the path to take!
Good luck and have a blast. I found the road going in after we hiked in. I was determined to get in there - there was broken chaise and garbage. So once we found the road - much easier to hike in - we took out what we could.
Take LOTS of water. I had a 2 liter camelback and ran out on the way back.
So Linda, would u be up for going again in october? that is when I will be there...and would like to do it..just not by myself ;0)
Sure - it gets hot early - so I would recommend leaving by 6:30am
Thanks everyone - we are really looking forward to doing this one.
you mean i have to get up early on my vacation? ;0)....sounds good!
Having been here just over 2 months there are only 3 days I know I have slept past 8am. Even though I don't have to be at work till 8:30am I still automatically wake up about 5 or so. Weird. But it is soooo awesome to go to Pt. Udall or anywhere east and watch the sunrise.
