How to Get Iguanas to Go Elsehwere
Although I love iguanas, I don't love them when they poop on my deck. Besides Iguana Rid, which does not seem very effective, is there any other way to deter them from hanging out in my backyard? Any secret island knowledge would be helpful.
Have a dog on your deck.
a dog or a cat
Just make sure cat is larger than iguana!
A cat VERY much bigger than an iguana and that would be an unusually large one! My cats catch baby iguanas in season (yes, I rescue them and set them back out safely) but they're way too smart to go after an adult and just lazily sit and watch them curiously ...
Not much you can do to keep them away from the pool other than chase them off. For several years I had the sole use of a friend's big pool on my days off and one big iggie loved to lay on the descending steps half submerged to cool off in the heat of the day. The hose on "jet" mode easily gets rid of any poop.
After I got cats I saw no more Iguanas ... I actually miss seeing them.
If you can sneak up behind them when they are on the deck and make them jump in the pool (they swim well) then they are pretty easy to scoop out with a pool net, put them in a trash can, take them for a ride a mile or so down the road, and then set them free. I was able to relocate my infamous "pool pooping bastido" this way a few months ago and he has not found his way back yet. He never once pooped on the deck, always in the pool 4 or 5 times a week. While I did admire his ability to elude me for months, I can't say I miss him.
This is the iguana's environment, and they are allowing us to use it.
Don't interfere with them and let them live their lives.

Agreed
I don't think that Iguanas are indigenous to the Virgin Islands. Then again most of us aren't. haha

Agreed. Development has done a number on their environment ...
If it is the large green iguanas they are an invasive species... They are known to cause a lot of problems in Puerto Rico... on top of that it is a carrier of salmonella, of course...
As mentioned above, large cats and dogs will scare them off... another option is fencing, which isn't practical at times and, understandably, some may not like it...

I tried to get a big old Iguana out from my front door-step using a broom.
Didn't want the dogs to attack it and have to deal with dead iguana parts so I used a broom and thought he would just run away when I waved it at him.
He attacked the broom and held on tightly so had to drag him to the bush across the road before he let go. One feisty iguana!

A trick to remember - if you need to remove a stubborn large one, throw a big towel over it and particularly over its head, then just pick it up, put it in the bush, remove the towel and off it will go. They go completely quiet if you cover their head and the towel allows you to get a good grip.
Thank you for that link Old Tart!
"In February 2012, the government of Puerto Rico proposed that the islands' iguanas, which were said to have a population of four million and considered to be a non-native nuisance, be eradicated and sold for meat."
Does anybody want "Iguana Stew"? or should I say "Iguana Wata"?
Burp, barf.... 😛

Tastes like a cross between bullfrog and alligator when prepared properly.
Oh goody... 🙂
Lionfish and Iguana - the new Surf & Turf.
OT - I did try that trick with a big one that wandered into my bedroom and scaled the wall behind the curtains behind my bed. I didn't know it was there. I was reading and saw movement behind the curtain over my head and thought "now what?" so off to get the broom and give it a whack to see what it was.
Turned out to be a rather large feisty iguana who did not appreciate the whack.
I thought, "I can do this by myself!" so after securing all dogs in another room, grabbed a towel, threw it over the iguana and pulled. By this time, it had latched on to the rattan night table, was hissing and lashing its tail to beat the band and I was trying to get it detached.
I gave up, let it go, opened all windows, took the screens off, left the room and closed the door.
I then put a "damsel in distress" call to my boyfriend and a couple other male friends as I figured "whomever would arrive first!"
When my friend arrived, wonder of wonders, there was no iguana to be found and believe me, I had him check everywhere, under the bed, in drawers, closets, behind curtains and furniture. My friend told me to either stop smoking the good stuff or share!
Guess, the iguana went out the window so back up with the screens. I always left the front door wide open so the dogs could come and go, so he got in that way while the dogs were away and must have climbed the wall to escape detection of dogs when they returned. Needless to say, I was glad that iguana episode was over. Only in de tropics, mon!
I pick the baby fluorescent ones off my screens inside my house all the time as I always have doors and screens open to the outdoors.
A sure sign something is up, is all the dogs sitting down and looking up at the screen, waiting patiently for it to come lower for a snack.
