I have read numerous posts stating to bring alot of money when moving to St.Croix. I am sure this is true, but my question is what is alot of money. Seems like that is very relative. Are we talking 10,000 or more in the range of 50,000. Input please.

I know that STX is cheaper than STT, but when I came down (Jan.of '98),I brought $7,000 with me, and it seemed to work out to be the right amount for me. I got a job my first day on island, then bought a car for $1,200, then rented an apartment (1st, last, security = $3,600) and still had enough to get the things I needed here and have some fun before I started working.

Keep in mind that costs have gone up some since Marty mnoved here 8 years ago and that not everyone finds a job their first day on-island. Come prepared to hustle to find a house, car and job ASAP and have an open mind about what will do to start with. Lots of people move a couple times and switch jobs a few times as they find better opportunities.

How much $$ you need when you arrive also depends on if you intend to buy or lease your residence. Most mortgage companies require a full 20% down payment to purchase homes in the islands.

Mike-
It depends on how you want to live. Its alot like moving anywhere. If you rent for awhile, assume roughly $1,000/month with a deposit also. If you need to get a car, can you be happy with an older (cheaper) model? Then, figure what you will need for 1-2 months living expenses. Most jobs that are quick to get into are in the tourist industry (bartending, waitressing, etc) and therefore pay somewhat low. Assume you will probably have to take something like that, at least while you look for something better, if you want.
We have a couple friends that came here with VERY little. They found jobs right away -were very open to do anything- and rented places that are "a little rough" but rented for $500/month. They work hard, live simply, and are very happy. In my estimation, I think a couple thousand would still be very do-able if you are willing to live simply. Some people wouldn't move here unless they could live in a million $$ home on the beach - it all depends.
We down-sized our life a lot. We live on less, and love it here !
