How long to Moving should i plan my PMV?
Hello,
My boyfriend and I are planning on moving January of 2007 for 100% sure!!! 🙂
After reading and doing a lot of research, we know that we should definitely do a PMV to find an apartment and a job. But how long before moving should we make the PMV?
What is a good amount of time to make sure that apartment will still be available when we actually make the move. Also, how long to ensure a position?
If this isn't such a big deal, during what time of year would be best to find a place to live and find a job?
I appreciate any information that would help.
Thanks,
Tatania
Hello Tatania,
The pre-move visits are suggested so you can see the island and investigate first hand; particularly for people who have never been to the island. Some people come on pre-move visits and decide against moving, some like it so much they just stay and some go home to finish the final steps involved in their move.
A landlord isn’t going to hold an apartment for you unless you pay a deposit and/or monthly rent. So, there are no guarantees in that department in terms of time unless you are putting up the $$ to hold the place.
What type of job? In some cases an employer wants to know you are on island to stay before they take much time discussing a job with you, in other cases phone calls prior to moving and interviews ahead of time are necessary.
As for best time of year for finding an apartment; high season runs about mid-November to mid-May. During that time there is an influx of seasonal workers, so based on this apartment availabilities are fewer. If you are seeking work in tourism related jobs then high season would be the time the most hiring gets done. Other than that and also jobs related to teaching/school year... no real 'best time' for job searching.
