How Do You Tell?

So I am looking through Island Traders and the virgin islands daily news online for rentals, and I wonder - how do you tell if the rental is on STX or STT? They all say Rentals - North, Rentals - South, etc.

Some of the ads say that they are in an area that is specific, like Red Hook, but others don't. Do you just call to see?

Is this the same with cars??

Almost everything in the VI Trader is STT, STJ or Water Island. They do very little with STX. Same with cars. You'll do better with the St. Croix Avis.

Dear Michael,

Linda J's response was totally on the mark.

This is why it's a very good idea to do a PMV, first to decide if island living really is for you and second to get a grasp of the different areas and their relativity to where you might be working. Numerous comments have been posted on this forum and digging and delving through them will give you a heads up.

Many newbies get by without a vehicle for a while and quickly learn that the whole concept gets old very fast. Renting an apartment from off-island is virtually impossible for the most part and is ill-advised to say the least.

Very brief but hope this helps. Cheers!

Thanks STT Resident & Linda J! We are coming down the first week of June for the PMV, and we are looking to move in late September or sometime in October. I found a place that we could rent for a month or two with our two cats while we look for something a little more permanent, but I think that both of us would like to find something initially if we could.

Is the St. Croix Avis online at all? Or is it generally the case that everyone that comes to STX has to live somewhere short term and then look for a place when they are on island?

Michael: Unfortunately to date the Avis is not online but, again, if you read through all the posts on this forum you might get some leads. IT does help to know that you're relocating to STX.

Alexandra on STX might be able to help you out once she's recovered from getting married! But since she was still posting on this forum on the eve of her wedding,,,

By the way and even though you didn't ask, your cats will be fine but please feel free to PM me with any questions you might have about their adjustment to island life in general. Was there, did that many moons ago, and, as a now 22 year STT resident who regularly rescues all sorts of animals, spays and neuters incoming feral cats. etc. - yikes! It never ends.

Cheers and all the best in your planning!

Thanks for all the help. I have spoken with Alexandra a little bit, and she has offered to help us find a place to rent. I think for now we are just going to come down, do the PMV and then figure everything out after that. Should all be pretty simple, as long as you keep it in perspective.

Do you know if there are needs for volunteering to help pets on STX at all? I know this is something that the significant other would be very interested in.

Thanks again!

Michael

Absolutely - both the shelter on STX and that on STT welcome helpers to give the animals some personal TLC.
