*I am taking a travel nursing position next summer and will be staying in St. Croix for 13 weeks with my husband and 12 yr. old daughter. We can have housing arranged for us or find our own. We would prefer to rent a boat to live on if possible, any suggestions?

Their are not many "liveaboards" on St Croix, and almost none for rent that I know of. The Green Cay Marina does have a few liveaboards. You will also find some others moored at various places around the island. Unless you are an experienced boat dweller, three months on a small boat might get a bit long for you all. There are many condo and villa options particularly during the summer season. Contact any of the local rental companies for information. Ask for the best possible rate during the slow season. enjoystcroix.com stcroixislandvillas.com vacationstcroix.com
are three of several on island

Hello Christine,

I agree with bd, although there are live aboards in the USVI, most are exactly that - the owner lives on them and usually its their home or their home/business(charter).... so they aren't really up to be rented out... you should definately look into it though - perhaps if you have experience and the owners are willing it might happen for you - try the marinas as suggested, there are two other marinas on St. Croix check the home page of this site and click on marinas and the numbers are their so you can call and see if they have any recommendations for you. i would definatlely suggest you look into an apartment or condo as well just in case the boat option does not work out.

SORRY I HAVE NO INFORMATION FOR YOU BUT I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE WHILE YOU ARE THERE. I AM A RN, WORKING IN THE ER AND MY FIANCE AND I ARE MOVING TO STX AFTER WE GET MARRIED NEXT JULY. I AM TALKING WITH CROSS COUNTRY TRAVEL CORP AT THIS POINT. NO OTHER AGENCIES SEEM TO BE SENDING NURSES TO USVI. HOW COME THE AGENCY IS NOT TAKING CARE OF THE LIVING ARRANGEMENTS FOR YOU? I LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU:) HUHNNA

I AM ALSO INTERESTED REGARDING YOUR HOUSING IN ST THOMAS. I AM ALSO PREPARING TO GO TO ST THOMAS FOR 13 WEEKS WITHIN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS. SO FAR CROSS COUNTRY HAS NOT TOLD ME ALOT ABOUT THE HOUSING SITUATION. ANOTHER NURSE AND I ARE PLANNING THE TRIP BUT WILL LIVE IN SEPARATE HOUSING HOPEFULLY. NEVER THOUGHT OF A BOAT. WHAT HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT LIVING EXPENSES? THANKS

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply, life has been busy. I have talked to several agencies who are placing nurses in the USVI , Preferred, Med Express, and American Mobile. I have not talked to Cross Country yet. We are looking for our own housing because I am traveling with my husband and daughter and the housing provided by the agency is for a studio or 1 bed only. We have decided to look for an apt or condo and will have a stipend of about 1200.00 per month. PLEASE let me know how you like the Islands and which hospital you are working at. I am desperate for any info that is not coming from the agency. One agency did try to discourage me from working on ST. Croix due to crime/safety issues even though we wanted to go there because it is less busy. Let me know. THANKS
