HI Liz, just curious. Where the DJ's are from. I used to do events in SF and know many DJ all across the US and elsewhere? So far My findings are slim for quality DJ house music but that doesn't mean there's no room for hope. Shannan
Hi Shannan,
D:Fuse is one of them, he had a residency in SF and LA and tours the US - he is excellent and a friend.
he has a website and is also on myspace.com - his website is www.djdfuse.com
any help appreciated
thanks!
Liz
I think you'll find it difficult to do the kind of promoting you are thinking about.
There are few "dance" clubs to begin with. I don't think they'd see the extra value in bringing in a big name DJ since it probably wouldn't increase their business enough to justify it.
On an island where cover charges are rare to begin with it would be tough to throw a party with a "guest DJ" for $10 when there is a similar party with a "regular DJ" for free elsewhere. You would get some people, but again, it would be tough to justify the extra expense of a DJ for what could possibly be less overall business for the venue.
You would probably be able to do something for special events and holidays. Those are the kinds of days where the venues pull out the stops and do all types of creative things. Buddha Bar had a stateside guest DJ for it's New Years Eve party.
There is a party promotion group called "First Friday" that promotes on STT. They often bring in stateside guys, but it's mostly hip-hop and reggae. They draw big crowds and charge a cover. I think it was $15pp.
Techno? House? Progressive? In the Virgin Islands? I think not. You do realize that this is the Caribbean, and no one really listens to that kind of music here. This isn't really America, and it's a totally different culture. People here wouldn't even consider techno to be a form of music, more like a form of noise!
You would, however, do well by promoting big name dancehall DJs and sound systems out of Jamaica, a lot of clubs here do that, and charge $20-25 and people come, because they are popular.
DL that's your oppinion on the MUSIC. WHat you don't realize is most people migrate here and just because they don't listen to it everyday or it doesn't show up in your world doesn't mean people don;t appreciate it. One thing I know about this island is music and the love and appreciate for all music is a gret part of everyday life. So please don't call it noise it frustrates me when people bad mouth what they don't understand!!
Liz, I know who your DJ friend is. Too funny. Small world. You should PM we should chat. I do have a theroy of what, when and how it might work. Cheers, Shannan
Whether it's noise or music, the reality is it would be hard to make a living playing only this type of music on any of the VIs.
I never called it "noise", I just said that others might think that. And no one here really listens to that kind of music, that is a reality. I wouldn't make a living playing calypso music at clubs in Iowa, now would I??? It's the same concept.
Good answer DL.
I happen to know many people here who listen to that kind of music. So just cause your not in the loop don't knock it.
And there are probably many people in Iowa that listen to calypso, but that doesn't mean that you could make a living there doing it, either. DL didn'tknock it, Rich didn't, Linda J didn't. Get off his/her back. No one is attacking your music preference, so there is no need to defend it (nor a need to assume that someone is 'not in the loop'. Loops are circles, and we all turn in different circles...that's what makes the world go 'round. Deal with it.)
Actually back in Missouri, playing calypso and reggae is a cool thing and many people go to clubs to hear it. Many places have a different theme each night and anything Carribbean goes over well, as well as Hawaiian themes. Everyone wants to feel like they are on an island even if for one night. As far as techno, etc. here in the VI, it is popular only one island away on Puerto Rico. I listen to their radio stations everyday and enjoy hearing it. I think it would be very welcomed by some. I am not saying it would do well and many may be against it, but you have my vote! Some people are just resistant to change. 🙂

Hi there,
We hit the STT clubs every weekend and the only place where you will hear techno is at Stereo in Frenchtown on Fri. and Sat. nights. My husband is totally into his techno music and it's hard for him here re. the music scene. He is from Liverpool, England and has followed DJ's for years. He is planning on going over to PR soon, there are a lot of great DJ's that come and play there and if you can afford it, it's worth the trip over. I love the local music and am a proud "socaholic".

Not true, like I mentioned, Stereo is pretty good, also check out the Buddha Bar for the Full Moon Friday parties. The Caribbean is a melting pot and there are a lot of statesiders here so to say condescendingly "you do realize, blah blah blah...." is a joke.
