Hotline Established to Report Public Corruption
"July 22, 2006—U.S. Attorney Anthony J. Jenkins—along with special agent in charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Louis Fraticelli—announced a new public corruption hotline on which citizens may call to report allegations of corruption.
The hotline, at 774-9296, is for people to report any allegation of public corruption in the territory. Callers should provide a statement of the allegations and should provide their contact information to assist in furthering an investigation into the allegations reported.
The hotline will be housed at the U.S. Attorney's Office on St. Thomas, and all information reported will be provided to the FBI, which will coordinate with other federal law enforcement agencies and with the Inspector General in the territory, Steven Van Beverhoudt. "

Without the ability to report anonymously I suspect this hotline will be ineffective and short-lived.
What are the odds that anyone will even be able to get through to that number? With all of our wonderful public servants here, that line should be busy 24/7/365!! JMO, of course. But, in my almost 9 years of living here, I am starting to really see how ineffective our justice system is, from the police, to the courts, to the judges, you name it. We may be a "U.S. Teritorry", but we certainly don't follow the constitution when it comes to civil rights/law/enforcement/punishment/etc. It seems to me, and this is only my OPINION, that he who spends the most money gets the most justice here. Those of us that play by the rules, do the right thing, wait for justice to prevail, , etc., only get the short end of the stick. Reading our newspaper everyday just confirms this for me. Don't get me wrong here, I love STT and never plan on living elsewhere, but I sure wish I knew what we could do to correct some of out biggest problems. I can only hope that the hotline does SOME good.
Perhaps I am being too optimistic, but is it possible that there is one faint glimmer of hope with respect to this hotline?
According to the article, "callers should provide a statement of the allegations and should provide their contact information to assist in furthering an investigation into the allegations reported."
It says "should provide their contact information." It doesn't say MUST. I wonder what would happen if you called in with a complaint anonymously? Do you think there is any hope that the matter would be investigated further?
Sorry, Mell...Big Brother is everywhere...you don't want to tell them, they're gonna find you anyway...which could take us to the Bush administration's total invasion of privacy with regard to conversations and communications, all in the name of protecting us. Which has nothing to do with living in the VI so I won't go there, although I could wax poetic.
I was a police officer for 9 years...trust me, the slightest thing gets picked up on. You may THINk you're anonymous...but you aren't...
Oops, probably opened a can of worms with that one...
P. S. Marty, I think I love you... 🙂
