I am a travel nurse assigned to the hospital in St. Thamas. Has anyone worked there and what were the conditions? Is there Nextel/Sprint service there?

We have Sprint here, so that should work out OK.

The RLS hospital in St. Thomas is actually very nice and surprisingly up-to-date. My girlfriend is a permanent nurse there. Her only complaint is that they are very understaffed and althought there aren't nearly as many patients that she was used to in Phila. she still can be overwhelmed.
As far as Nextel, the merge with Sprint has not yet happened down here. They don't expect that for at least a year from now. My Nextel did not work when I came down here. I bought a Sprint phone.

To add to the conversation, the hospital is JCAHO certified. The experience of staff nurses is somewhat different from the NOPAed nurses (staff), but I suspect that is true everywhere. You will be seen as a short timer, not really part of the island fabric. But come and enjoy!!

Just to add my 2 cents,as a previous travel rn, yes the hospital on st. thomas is certified and fairly up to date. Most of their "issues" stem from their being a small hospital but you see that anywhere there are small hospitals. There are quite a few travelers there so find them and enjoy the island!!

I am also a travel RN who is coming in November. Any info ya'll have I would really appreciate. I have Nextel also but do I need to invest in a SPrint service?? How is transportation??Are you going to rent a car....any info please...

We had Nextel when we made our first trip to STT...When we were going down to STX recently, we were told that b/c of the merger, our phones WOULD work since they do have Sprint there. After we got back and I talked with some ex-coworkers (I used to work for Sprint) and they said that Nextel won't be working off Sprint's towers until at least early 2007. So my husband and I switched to Cingular!
