Hello
I am exploring my options of maybe retiring to the islands. StCroix mostly. I have a few years yet. I have been reading everything on here (and anywhere else) for the feasibility. I have not run into any info on owning a horse. I don't necessarily need to bring one. But would like to acquire one whether on island or import. I've had horses all my life. Would really like to continue. I realize there are big differences on how people view animals on island compared to mainland. But would really like to hear from someone with experience and knowledge of rules and regulations on horse ownership. Anyone out there with any insight? Thank you in advance.

Maybe I will be able to volunteer my time for riding privileges. 😎 I plan to volunteer at the animal shelter. Will definitely check that avenue out when I visit.

LiquidFluoride's wife has CruzanCowgirls rescue here on STX. She has rescued tons of horses here in the past few years. You can contact her on Facebook. I'm sure she'd love have another horse lover here on island. She and her family do great work here!

There's horses out in Cotton Valley also. However, not sure how active the pony club still is out here. There's not as many horses as there used to be, and it looks like some of the land they used to use is up for sale. That land might be something to look into.

Don't bring one, unless it's a gypsy vanner that you want to give to me 😉

Rules and regulations,,, haha!!!!!!

Look us up when you come down, we currently have 26 horses in our care, I'm sure we could figure something out to get you your horsey fix 😉

Okay. I had to google "gypsy vanner" . That looks like the definition of high maintenance! But very pretty.(tu)

Ahhh hearing gypsy vanner brings back memories! My uncles had them when I was a little girl. They were spectacular under harness.

Thank you LiquidFlouride. I will certainly look you and your wife up when I finally get to visit. I LOVE Gypsy Vanners. Never had the pleasure of owning one. I own a Missouri Fox Trotter (gaited horse) and Hackney pony a carriage pony. I think I spoke with your wife thru e-mail a couple years back. She told me the same thing. I'm hoping my husband and I can take a trip out in a couple years. I still have 7 yrs before I can retire. But I'm known to plan waaaay ahead of time. We are just starting to think the Caribbean can be an option for us. My worry is if we don't or can't buy land will I be happy without my horses. Although I love to do many things. I think I will be OK if I can get a "fix". And would be delighted to help out anyway I can.

Thank you all for your comments. I'm so excited that this adventure could possibly work.

The "riding school" is Pony club they teach English riding.. My daughter went for a while but she didn't get along with the other attendees much (plus we have 31 horses, they couldn't really teach her much).

You should be able to find out about them. I hear recently they have been talking smack about my organization so I have a bit of a bad taste in my mouth; but honestly they are good people when they aren't talking about you behind your back 🙂
