Good Day All! I have no children on island, so I have no clue. I have a friend who wishes to move here, however, she can not afford private school and is not real fond of putting her children in the public school system here. She is very interested in home schooling her children.

Does anyone know the process of doing this and whom she could call?

I googled "Virgin Islands Department of Education" and came up with all these: VI DOE. I know nothing about homeschooling either, but assume that this might be a good place to start?

I would suggest lots of research and personal reflection. Moving kids to a strange place and then trying to change everything about their schooling is, in my opinion, a recipe for disaster. Just think about it long and hard.

Linda, Bratt is talking about me. My husband and I have thought about this for over a year now, and one thing that "Bratt" didn't mention is that my children are very young, one of them is not even 2 years old yet (obviously not in school). The other child is 8 and just finishing her 2nd grade year. Change at this age is easy to overcome, I should know because my fathers job moved my family around like a pinball growing up. I won't be able to afford sending 2 kids to private school and 1 to college (yes I know, my kids are really spread out) 😮

@ Popflops, thanks for the link but I've been there and done that......the contact link is ridiculous, when I email, I get it back undeliverable and half the numbers are disconnected or NO ONE answers. Although, now I think of it.....I haven't tried in a while, so maybe I'll try the numbers again (hopefully the site has been updated).

But please if anyone has any info at all (maybe you work with someone who home schools, or a neighbor) I would appreciate it. I have searched and searched the internet with so much condescending information out there.......It's hurting my head! :S

I just need read solid info!

imij,

I, too, moved around as a child. But, and again, my opinion only, the one contstant in a child's life is going out every day to school. If you child is used to going to school and interacting with other children, I think homeschooling will be just one more thing to adapt to.

But hey, I might be all wet. Wil you please keep us informed on your move? Your experiences and impressions will be valuable to those who come after you. This topic is discussed all the time. It's unfortunate, but rarely do we get "the rest of the story" - the after-move updates.

imij, contact AZ Academy. http://www.azvi.org/. I have heard that they are a good school and have an excellent support system for homeschoolers. They could probably give you all the information that you need. Good luck.

I think those of us who moved here, stayed, and participate on this forum are sharing "the rest of the story." 🙂
