hitchhiking on island

I spent some time on Orcas Island off the coast of Washington, and hitch-hiking there was no big deal. There were about ten thousand of us on island and everyone kind of knew each other, so we all just gave each other rides. Also, no one bothered locking their car doors. Are St. Thomas or any of the USVIs like this? Because I don't have the money to ship my car down or to take cabs if I move there, and Islander says the public transit isn't overly reliable.
thanks,
Brendan

Hello Brendan,

Hitch-hiking on St. Thomas is done, not the most common thing. On St. Croix, the island is sort of spaced out, larger then St. Thomas to be specific so doesn't lend it self to hitching or walking as well. St. John sure you could hitch/walk to places. On St. Thomas I have seen people hitching rides. Day time is fine, people will be very wary if is late evening and you more then likely won't get picked up.

In terms of public transportaion - I say its not the greatest mode of transportaion for visitors - reason being it is not the easiest system to pick up right away and it is not terribly realiable -so if you are here for a day on a cruise you might very well get stuck and frustrated and waste precious time. If you are living here, then by all means Brendan learn the bus system, you have the time. Residents and locals use the bus system and the 'dollar buses' (which are private trucks/safaris/buses that run the same route as the buses and charge $1 for many routes). These forms of transportation are fine for you to learn and use as a resident. But not the best idea for a person on vacation who wants to relax, get to the beach, not worry about not getting back to the ship on time because of a tardy bus and so forth.

So sure you could hitchhike and also learn the bus routes and use the bus. Once you get a hang of it and learn which routes the buses run, you should be just fine. Others do it.

Make sure when choosing an apartment and a job that you try to select them in close proximity to each other and to grocery stores ect. so that your commute is less.
