History question
A friend's daughter is doing a paper on a guy named David Levy Yulee. Evidently he was in the FL legislature in the early 1800s. According to some research she's already done, "David Levy was born in St. Thomas on June 12, 1810. He was the son of Moses Elias Levy, a Moroccan Jew who made his fortune in timber in the Caribbean....." I guess his last name "Yulee" he took as his legal last name in 1846 for some reason. Anyway, the friend's daughter's research has now extended to STT history and she's asked me if I can find out any interesting facts about the Levy family on STT, did they own land, sugar mills, where in the Caribbean would they likely have done timbering, etc. I don't intend to do any research for her but I did promise to see if I could get a few "leads" related to the Levy Caribbean history. Ronnie? Anna? Anyone else out there got any suggestions, trivia, tidbits of facts regarding the Levy family? Her mom and dad have a timeshare in STT and I'm going to suggest she consider going with them next time and visiting the library. Thanks in advance for any leads you can provide.
A fair amount of info at www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~usvi/ also google : virgin islands genealogy
Right across from the library is International Plaza. That was once owned by the Levi family. Don't recall the y. Leaylle Levi owned a house on backstreet right next door to the Masonic Lodge. All I remember they had in International Plaza at the time was a soda factory. I believe they were also liquor importers in the 1960s. Now, that does not discoount a Levy family here as well!
Thanks everyone! I'll pass the info along.
