Hess Oil Virgin Islands Corp
Do any of you work or know anyone that works for Hess Oil Virgin Islands Corp?
I heard the employ a high number of residence on STX. I'm wondering about the turn over rate and work ethics of the company. I guess a stand point from a person that works for them. Also do you see Hess Oil Virgin Islands Corp as a good long term employer.
Hess Oil Virgin Islands Corp. (HOVIC) is now HOVENSA which is a combination of HOVIC and Petroleos de Venezuala, SA. They combined in 1998.
They are the number on employer in St.Croix. They hire people from all over the world. You rarely hear of any bad things coming from them at all. Some times they have labor disputes, but they are handled right away.

I NOW I USED TO WORK FOR THEN.
I can't give you any real recent recommendation, but my dad worked for them for years in the 70's and never had a bad thing to say about them. He worked there when there was a huge explosion and later when we moved to the states there attorneys had to come talk to him. But as I said, everything about HESS was fine at the time. We moved to STX for his job with HESS. I wish we could have stayed forever and now I am trying to get back.
I do wonder we are living in New Jersey now. Would it make sense for my husband to look for a position here and ask for a transfer to STX. It still would be a drive for him. I believe they are near New York we are closer to Philadelphia in South Jersey. I would think that he could at least interview here.

This is a really interesting thread. If you believe the local STX plaintiffs' bar, HOVENSA is quite a controversial employer, a strident point of view for those of us within earshot, but one that, apparently, isn't apparent to those not living here.
Don't feel bad, I've talked to well-informed St. Thomians, and even *they* are unaware of the crazyness over here, and the millions and millions of dollars that certain plaintiffs' attorneys on STX extort out of HOVENSA every year. The Daily News doesn't (really) cover STX, and The Avis isn't available online.
I can't offer an opinion, but I would suggest that, like all things related to moving to strange and far-off places, people do their homework.

Does anyone know what company runs the foodservice contract at the refinery?
Thanks!
virginbound,
Are you saying HOVENSA is good or bad? What are these acts of extortion? Work-related injuries or alleged environmental damage?
Ethically, I can't give you an opinion on HOVENSA.
However, I can say that many people who live on STX have very strong opinions about HOVENSA (good and bad), and that these opinions, positions, points of view--whatever--are not well known off-island, even on STT.
I can also say that I think there are some very unethical and overzealous plaintiffs' attorneys on STX.

WHEN I ASKED A FEW LOCALS WHAT THEY THOUGHT OF HESS THEY SAID THEY DONT LOVE IT BUT IT ONE OF THE BEST PAYING JOBS ON THE ISLAND. THERE ARE SOME DEPARTMENTS SAFER THAN OTHERS. WHERE MY HUSBANDS DEPARTMENT IS SEEMS PRETTY SAFE. I WAS IMPRESSED WITH HOW CLEAN THE FACILITY WAS COMPARED TO ANY STEEL MILL IN NORTHWEST INDIANA. I WAS TOLD THAT HESS CORP. SPENDS A LOT OF $$$ ON CLEANING
