Hi Everyone:)

Well, I did it... I've received my family's blessing and have made the final decision to move to St. Croix with two of my good friends. We're giving ourselves a year and a half to get our affairs in order here in Kansas City and then we'll be on our way!!! We all look forward to getting to know all of you and hopefully making some good friends who will be waiting for us when we get there:) We're all young gentlemen in our mid 20's.

I do have a few questions that I wasn't able to find direct answers to in the last three days of staying up till 4am reading all these posts.

First off, it seems like there are a lot of people from KC on the islands... that's great. Is there by any chance a way to see the Chiefs and Royals games out there?

I'm lucky to have a great career that I can do from anywhere with cellular reception and a halfway decent internet connection but my other two friends will be looking for jobs on the island.

- One of my good friends will be looking for employment as an elementary special ed teacher. Ideally, he'd like to work for the public school system but would consider teaching at a private school if the need were great enough. I'd love to hear any experiences anyone has had with either and any recommendations as to where he could start putting his feelers out in the private school arena.

- My other friend has a degree in Geography and computer science with minors in GIS and Economic development. He'll work anywhere but if anyone knows anyone who could help get him into the right circles for finding a career in his field (not necessarily right when we get there) It would be much appreciated.

As far as finding a place goes, we're planning on renting for a year or two then, provided we decide to stay, buy a place. Is it difficult to find beachfront condo's to rent? Is beachfront even the way to go? If there are pro's and con's that anyone can share, that'd help a ton.

Last question for now... we'll be making several trips down there to start to get to know the island and the community... first trip is mid november to mid december sometime. Would anyone be able to offer any advice for making these trips as hassle free as possible or maybe even recommend a good, honest travel agent who can get us a good airfare/lodging/car package?

That's about all for today... I look forward to hearing from all of you!

I have had good luck with Midwest auto rental 877-7672-0438. The first time down we stayed at Divi resort. Very nice, but way out on the east end. I would try King Christian Hotel, it's right downtown Christiansted. I know one of the girls at the dive shop has her family stay there when they are in town. It's within walking distance to everything in that small town.

Good luck on cheap airfare.

Hey KCMO-
We just recently moved to STX from KC, MO -actually 3 weeks tomorrow. There are also 2 families we know on STT and one on STJ. I believe we are the only recent folks from KC on STX. The island is fairly quiet, and very much like a small town. Housing here is fairly reasonable even is you are from the Midwest. High season is late Nov/early dec. so it is probably best to come before to get settled. Lately the local paper (St Croix Avis) has been filled with rentals - anywhere from 500/month and up. We just starting looking for jobs, but have a few leads. Teachers appear to be in demand. We bought an ocean front condo for less than our medium priced house in KC. Many big beautiful homes on the ocean have small rentals that are very reasonable. It is common here for a big home to have a rental or two on their property. There is not much night life here- appears things close up early. The Chiefs are not easy to get - No Direct TV - only cable and Dish. There are a couple bars on island that MAY have them thru their packages - we will have to see when the season starts (so far no pre-season games 🙁
The beaches are beautiful, snorkeling and diving are fabulous, people are friendly. It is definately NOT as difficult to move here as one would expect. We kept our KC Sprint phones and everyone calls us as a local call! ATM's work from our bank in KC, etc. Let us know if you have other questions....
We'll let you know about the Chiefs when the season gets underway.

Welcome to the board!

For your friend that is a teacher. He can visit the Department of Education's Employment website at http://www.teachislands.vi/, that would be the place to start. He can also look up private schools on this website, scroll to the top of this page, click on Home then choose Education in the menu. There you will find a list of schools by island. The schools with websites have links to them, if not the telephone number is provided. Most of the private schools have employment informaiton/requirements on their websites, so that will be helpful.
