5:30 PM on east end STX: Clouds building - Dark clouds moving in - Breeze picking up (We've had no breeze all day) - Just felt a few raindrops.

Good luck to all. Be safe. Look out for those downed power lines.

Wondering when WAPA will shut down the grid??
Do they wait for the winds to reach a certain speed?

Power was spotty as I drove in from North Shore to the Buccaneer. Ours was off, but there were patches of power on the way across island. My guess is they'll turn it off soon. Wind is picking up.

Power off in Mandahl but is trying to come back on. It's sputtering in and out.

The power has been out in Salt River STX since 6:45am. I don't know if it was all of Feeder 6 or just our neighborhood or what. Apparently it wasn't the whole island at once, based on the above comments.

The power in Salt River STX just came back, at 9:55am (we're on Feeder 6).

Hey Islanders!

We've been keeping an eye on Earl from Oklahoma (been watching your weather since deciding we want to relocate there). See that you guys are in for a hit, or at least a glancing blow. If anyone has a hurricane watch party, have a drink for me and my hubby! LOL Everybody stay safe and God bless!

Saundra: I think you may have a mistaken idea about hurricanes. You really need to be sober during a storm as you might have to make quick decisions that will save your life and property. At my location, we are in a lull at the moment, but are expecting more today and tonight.

Power went down about 6:30 this am and came back around 10.
Big trees were really whipping. Papayas and banana trees all snapped off or laying down.
One big tree branch on the gen shed.
Bit of a lull right now but the worst is yet to come I'm afraid..
ATT cell service working better than ever.:-o
Internet working on Hughesnet (tu)
Dish TV up and running.:D
Landline phone working.

According to Storm Carib WAPA shuts down the grid when winds get to 64 MPH.

Find your candles, flashlights and batteries for this evening. Oh and find the cork screw!!

East Ender,

Sorry my joking nature didn't come across. It's sort of an inside joke between my husband and I, shaking our heads at the people (especially on the mainland) who don't take hurricane precautions seriously. Unfortunately, the people who view hurricanes as another excuse to stay in and party are frequently the ones who have to be rescued later because they were unprepared. Sorry, sarcasm is often my way of dealing with a scary/difficult situation. You guys all take care and BE SAFE!! 🙂

sdove, i know that in the florida keys people have hurricane parties all the time. some of those people have been almost swept away too. i think the reason people gather is they feel that there is safety in numbers??

Wish you all good luck and safety in St. Croix. Watch for washouts and pot holes. Hope it is a good rain that is the needed kind. Good luck to all! From sunny Palm Coast, Florida.

Watching from sunny PA and just wanted you guys to know how valuable your posts are (and have been in previous hurricanes) in helping us judge conditions down there. Our house down there is ready. But we don't get many specifics on the news here and can't expect the neighbors down there to give us updates as frequently as I can get them by coming here. So thanks - and everyone stay safe.

Ditto about these posts. We were down last week to secure everything but watching the news and not being on island I feel connected to the island by these valuable posts. I may be back sooner than I thought if we do have damages. Hunker down everyone and please take care!

It's a wee bit blowy at the moment. I'm shocked that I still have power.
