Help with the VI property tax bill…..STX
I’ve been trying to call the Tax Collectors office all day to find out how I can pay my “outstanding property taxes on the reverse side of my 2008 bill” from 2005 which I do owe. For five hours off and on I’ve been dialing both 772-3115 and 772-0120 and no answer except for a machine once in a while. I'm off island so I can't get to the tax office.
Does anyone know if you can just include in the supplied envelope a second check with my parcel number and the words “2005 VI property tax” on the check?
I thought this would be something simple…………..but who knows! If any of you had any experience with this please let me know!

Rather than mail it directly to the tax office, I suggest you mail a check made out to the appropriate payee..(.VI Tax....whatever) to a friend on island who can pay it in person. Be sure the friend gets a PAID STAMPED copy of the bill.
If you don't have a friend to ask, perhaps your Realtor....
I did this with a traffic ticket once and it worked.
Write a letter along with your check stating:
Cashing of this check will be my recipt of paid in full.
Write "PAID IN FULL" on the memo line on the check.
When they cash it that is what it means.
When do property tax bills generally come out? I haven't gotten anything yet... but I just bought my property in February of this year.
This year they have issued the 2007 and 2008 bills. You should have received at closing a credit for unpaid tax years up thru the date of transfer of ownership. If you haven't received the 2007 and 2008 bills it's because they were sent to the previous owners address. I suggest you get down to the tax office to correct the issue.
Mine was sent to the previous owner who notified us. I had the tax office update their records to send bills to me instead. This does not remove the previous owners name, as the ownership was still theirs for that tax year, but does change the mailing address c/- the new owner.
I read in today's avis that after Aug 16th they will start applying interest and penalties to the 2007 bills, and today is the last day for the full 5% discount for early payment of 2008 bills.
Thanks for your help, IslandHops. It looks like I may have a bit of a mess on my hands since I'm off island for quite some time.... but at least I can start trying to deal with it now rather than waiting for a huge amount of interest and fees!
