Help with mold!

Hello Everyone,

It's been a while since I posted anything - Lew and I moved in October and with the Holidays and all that have been extremely busy - so, Happy New Year to all and, yes, we are SO happy we made the move!

I have searched the board and didn't really find what I wanted. We've found a great house on the Northside and I wake up and look at the view of Magen's Bay and still can't believe how lucky we are to see that every day.

The one problem I am facing is mold and mildew! Short of installing cedar closets for our clothes, what can/should I do? Even some of my books are growing a fuzzy green cover!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks very much,

Lesa

I have the same problem. There is no easy, cheap, or even good solution, but here is just about everything that can be done:

1. Put dehumidifiers in your closets. This seemingly simple fix isn't always that easy. If you don't have an electrical outlet in the closet, that's a problem. If you haven louvered doors, that's a problem because the humid air just keeps coming in. You may have to empty the dehumidifier more than once a day.

2. Put dehumidifying heaters in your closets. I "inherited" a couple of these. They also run on electricity and get slightly warm, drying out the air in their immediate vicinity. I don't find them very effective.

3. Liberal use of Dry-It containers. Not really appropriate for large area in a very humid environment. This is better for use in a large closed container, IMO.

4. Install air conditioners (mini-splits, for example), shut your windows, and run your A/C almost all of the time. Some mini-splits have a setting that is for dehumidifying. You don't have to turn the place into a refrigerator to accomplish the dehumidification.

Lesa,

I keep my windows open and all the inside doors. I spray my closets laundry, room and bathrooms every week with lysol.

Thanks Jules and Dougtamii-

I'll give it all a try. I bought lysol yesterday. We have a portable ac unit that we can use...it seems to be worse in the 2nd bedroom instead of the master. I'm not sure why...if I find any other solutions, I'll share! But I'm sure you all have been here long enough to know all the tricks! Thanks again.

Leasaandlew,
Your problem might be a little more than Lysol can fix. Mold remediation professionals use OXY-Mold MX-500. You can talk to the company and explain your problem and buy their product directly. 1-866-370-2499 or another help is Clorox Professional.com they will talk to you about your problem and even send you a free sample of their products (1800 524 5133). I use Clorox once a year and Lysol every week with great results.

This is for Linda J, and dntw8up, I have no financial interest in these companies or products!

I forgot to add that I also mop all my tile floors and front porch once a week with bleach and water. X14 spray tile cleaner in the showers works great. The foam X14 does not work as well.

We have a small space heater in our closet that keeps everything dry. Bleach will be your new best friend. And otherwise, air circulation seems to help. We have our windows open almost all the time and our fans run 24/7. Books are the real problem. If I had anything valuable or with great sentimental value, I'd send it off-island.

We have no a/c.

I know mold can be a problem but I'm surprised so many people have trouble, I've lived west, north and now east and the only thing I have trouble with is dust, well and dog hair.

It can be a real problem on the north side of STT, especially after a few days of rainy weather. I've luckily not had a mold problem on the south side. Friends who live near Mountain Top run their A/C continuously so their electric bills are horrendous. A lot depends on how your place is situated but you've gotten good suggestions. Keep a close eye on your leather shoes & purses too.

Thanks again, Dougtamii, LindaJ and Trade. We'll work on it and see how it goes. You're lucky Betty! But, even with the mold, the view is worth it! I'll let you all know how it goes.
