Hi everyone!
We have been trying to get High Speed Internet for us and our villas and are problem is:
We do not have line of sight of any towers in our location. We know of Satellite Now, and are inquiring (we already have Dish Network), tried Hughesnet of PR (heard nothing back).
Any Idea's? Would appreciate your help, SICK OF DIAL UP!!!!! 🙂

Sherri, this is a new company & a friend of mine lives in Agnes Fancy & got this. They''re not in the phone book yet. My friend absolutely loves it so it might be worth a call.

the company is COM-TEK . The number is: 715-4818 She dealt with a man named Kameal & she said the installer was named Alex. It's about $42.95/month, $225.00 to install of which $100.00 is refundable if you disconnect.

I'm going to call them after the first of the month. Their office is downtown in one of the bank buildings (I'm thinking First Bank but can't swear to it.) Post back what they tell you & if you decide to try it.

We are on top of the hill at Mahogany Run and have Choice line of sight dsl. I also have an air card from Cingular for my laptop. Most times the air card is just as fast the the service from Choice and it's portable to boot. However it only works with one laptop at a time. The Choice service will handle multiple users.
You just have to watch the Cingular bill because from the Northside you can pick up a BVI carrier. Cingular has always been quick to remove those charges when the discrepancy is pointed out to them.

You may want to try and air card and see what sort of service it will provide. Most carriers offer them. I think my unlimited data xfer plan is about $50/month. Cingular offers some sort of try & buy plan. If it doesn't work out for you return it. I don't know about the other carriers.

Regards
HB

Hi Harry,
Had never heard of an air card, interesting and more to learn about! lol! Only thing is, I need to service two villa's plus myself! As for Choice, I know that isn't an option for us as we are not in line of sight! I certainly appreciate your input!

Trade,
Didn't get home in time to call Com-Tek yesterday so after errand running today, that will be the first thing I do when I get home!

Is anyone out there using HughesNet in STT?

Here is the Link to cingular's site

http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/cell-phones/pc-cards.jsp

Most wireless providers offer them. But for 2 villas and yourself it may not be practical because each laptop needs a card. However if you travel often as we do they are great.

HB

I'm a Hughesnet dealer on St. Croix as well as Dishnetwork. Works extremely well. The look angle 45-55 degrees is very forgiving and I can't imagine any property not being able to use it. The plans start at $59.
The downside is the upfront for hardware and installation. PM for more info.

Thanks Harry, I will ck it out if for nothing else, but to educate myself. Any info in the area is greatly needed for us all!

Trade, I called Com-tek yesterday, but only got a machine, left them a voice message and am looking forward to hearing from them, tho I will more than likely try again Monday morning!

Skys the limit, I pm'd you, am VERY interested! We had called Hughesnet of PR and they said they were coming over to do some installations, that they would contact us when they were coming, NOT!

Oh, the joys of livin' in da Islands! LOL! 🙂 That is OK, I wouldn't trade it for the world!

UPDATE!

Talked with Com-tec, they got a hold of me before I got the chance to call them (this is good)! BUT unfortunately you DO need line of sight to Mtn. Top I believe she said. That was it for me! lol! Thanx Trade for passing on the info.! Maybe it will work for you? I didn't take the conversation any further at all as far as prices, etc.

Then called SkysTheLimit! Great Guy and Trade you may want to see if he can help you out! We have some homework to do on this end and then he will get us set up! Great Guy and wonderful personality! Thanx for spending so much time answering all of our questions! 🙂

Aww, that's too bad, Sherri. I wonder if there's another tower near me. Dishes can be a problem for me with condo rules - it all depends.

The homework is testing wireless signal on property with a router and a laptop. Then it can be determined if access points will be required. The satellite system will just plain work! Happy to assist.

Trade,
Only thing I can think of for you is DSL with Innovative, which of course is thru the phone line. Supposed to be better than dial up, but not as good as you would like, I am sure! There's got to be a way!

SkyTheLimit,
Got the router today and will borrow a laptop. Then we have to wait until we can have access to both villas! I am getting excited! Can't wait to actually see the occasional You Tube video's that are posted on the forum!

If I have to use a phone line, I'll just stay with dial-up. I'm not wild about buying a laptop & using a Cingular card either. Good luck with your options, Sherri. Hope it works for you.

You need a dish with it though, right? If so, how big?
