Help, I'm on a 1 year plan
Hey folks,
I have been checking this site everynight since I found it on Monday 10/6 and I love all the info., in fact I can't wait to get home each night so I can log on and see what's new.
I have read from several people that they spent years planning their move to the islands. I am on a 1 year plan to move to St. Croix and I would welcome suggestions for things I need to do over the next few months to get to that point - any advice from your experience or what you did will be appreciated i.e. when you got ready to ship your belongings was it a hard and long process? Did you ship a car? Do I have to own the car to ship it there? i.e. do I have to have possession of the title to the car? What are the restrictions for bringing pets? Will they quarantine my dog upon arrival?
I have visited St. Croix twice and will be going several more times prior to my move next year, but I just want to know what I need to be putting in place here @ home starting immediately. As I said, any suggestions will be helpful. Thanks in advance!

Theresa,
Some people spend years planning, others spend months and some don't plan at all except for deciding they are going and buying a ticket and packing their suit case. In terms of making an assesment of who fits into each category... usually people who want to retire here or live here permanently who have families, homes ect... spend several years planning the move.... people who get job transfers or who decide they want to live here and might have families... might spend a few months planning... and then some who are unattached, young, seasonal workers, just want the experience might just say I am going to do it - and do it. There are also those that come here on vacation, fall in love with the place and never leave - calling family back home to send their stuff because they aren't coming back.
One year is a good amount of time to get things figured out. I would suggest reading this board, reading the newspaper, finding out as much about St. Croix as possiable and asking any and all questions that come to mind as you do your research as silly as they might seem to you there are plenty of others asking or wondering the same thing.
The questions you are beginning to ask or good ones. There are people who ship their cars and some that don't and buy here. You do have to have the title - I have been told that smaller banks if you are a good customer and you have a co-signer who is still in that town might write you a special letter allowing you to take the car out of the state to the islands. I don't know much about it but you might check with your bank on that. No quarantine on the pets, there are lots of doggy and kitty threads on this board - go to the top of your original post, right below the picture/banners there is an option called "seach" you can search for pets, dogs... and change the date range to all and then you can read the various topics on moving a pet, what to do, what you need, doggy freindly beaches, what locals think about dogs. ect.
If you plan to visit St. Croix a few more times before moving that is great... you can plan one trip to be a pre-move trip... go to the grocery store, go to the cable and telephone office check it out, check out the bank, check out car sales so you can see how much they run there and that will help you decide if to ship or buy new on island.
Do you homework and ask questions.

As I have often said, buy the Settler's Handbook and memorize it. If you move to the USVI, there will be a test when you get here. Seriously, except for this board, it was the most helpful information we found. A pre-move visit is also a must.
Linda-I am moving end of December and would love to know the name of the delaer you went to to buy a car.
Thanks for your help!
hi lorien we bought our cars from scott fricks he is the manager of toyota of st croix good luck if you decide to go that route tell him mike and linda sent you
I'm jealous, as I'm on a 10 year plan 🙁
At least there will be more 'seasoned relocators' available when I'm ready then... always good to have more people to answer my questions.
Congratulations.
Chris
