I am wondering how many employers provide health insurance, or how much it would cost to puchase your own if an employer doesn't provide any. If I were to move to the VI, I wouldn't want to be going for a period of years without it.

If you currently have health ins. you can usually keep it going yourself with cobra(?), Cigna(?) Can't remember the name, but your ins. co will know.

As far as employers providing it, many of the large jewelry stores have it available. And many of the large companies do, too. It really just depends on the employer and the industry that they are in and how many employees they have.

One caveat, though. Even with health ins., if you are going to be sick, go to Puerto Rico to be sick. Our health care here at the hospital is not on par with the U.S. mainland. Not in my experience, anyway.

Bill: There are not many companies licensed to sell health insurance in the VI which keeps the prices high. Talk to an insurance agent about your choices.

While I hate to disagree with Marty 😉 ... unless you are fluent in Spanish, you do *not* want to get sent to Puerto Rico for care. There are problems in the local health care system, but the local hospital does a good job with many things. However, there is not a full-time neurosurgeon, there is no cardiac surgeon, no pulmonologist, endocrinologist, etc. It is a rural hospital and you can't drive to the next county for care. There is a high percentage of uninsured which causes financial problems.

I currently have my health insurance through my employee on the mainland, I guess I'll start there to see if the insurance company would be able to provide a policy for the VI. I'm currently healthy, but you never know when that odd illness or car accidnet is going to happen. Is it easy to find insurance agents once on the island, or do you need to ask around to find out where they are?

very few companies offer health insurance from my experiences here. maybe 10% of the companies. and often they only provide emergency health insurance... it sucks
