My husband and I will be moving to the Islands soon. However, as I'm researching all the different aspects of living I am unsure of insurance. I am currently covered by UPMC for You. Does anyone know if that insurance is accepted on the Islands?

I'm guessing no since I entered 00802 into Doctor search on UPMC website

This is what it said

The ZIP code you entered (00802) falls outside the typical UPMC Health Plan network service area.
Members enrolled in an Out of Area plan, currently traveling, or have eligible dependent coverage can look below to find a doctor outside Western PA

A big hurdle for some thinking of moving here is the lack of affordable individual health insurance coverage which just isn't available here and is coupled with the fact that we aren't covered under the Affordable Health Care Act. Some stateside programs may cover you for up to six months (check with yours) but after that you're on your own unless you can find employment with a company which offers a group plan..

If you or your spouse have citizenship anywhere outside the US, you can get great insurance coverage with Cigna Global. I just received their offer to renew my policy.

You'll have to call your insurance company, as we don't know the policy details. But if it's individual coverage, then you most likely won't be able to continue coverage here.

Hmm wondering if that works for dual citizenship with one being US. Web site just says citizens living abroad.

Yes...it did for us. But I'm not certain if Cigna Global is writing new policies in the VI. We still have great coverage at an affordable price through Cigna Global though.

Hey vicanuck,

Do you still have coverage with Cigna Global? It seems they are not writing new policies for anyone living the USVI at this time. I asked them for a quote yesterday (I am a dual citizen, estimated a quote based on my non-US citizenship) and this is what I received today:

Thank you for your enquiry to Cigna Global.

Unfortunately Cigna Global are unable to offer cover to anyone living in the US Virgin Islands.

I am sorry we would be unable to help you on this occasion.

Thank you for your interest in Cigna Global.

Kind regards,
Rory Grant
Leads Management Executive

If you do still have your policy, I would be very interested to share that information with Mr. Grant.

Oh yes, my policy is still in full effect. We've been with them for some time and I think we're grandfathered in for the time being. I keep wondering when I'm going to get a notice saying they're cutting us loose.

Got it. I bet they stopped writing policies here a year or two back when the government was (most recently) threatening Healthcare International. I hope your coverage can continue!
