Health insurance option!
Hello all,
As you know, BUPA (and other carriers) are no longer writing individual health insurance policies for those of us on island (which is criminal, really); therefore, we have been forced to be uninsured...until NOW!! It has been brought to my attention (and others on island) that a company out of London called Healthcare International, will cover us!! And, we have formed a group (the Virgin Islands Group) which allows us to get significant discounts on our annual premiums. You can choose the amount of coverage, from a high deductible plan to full medical, dental and vision. The person who has organized the group is not an agent for the company...she and her husband are just very satisified customers of the company and she wants to help us all get coverage, if we choose to have it.
PM me if you need the links to the website, a fast quote and to fill out an application to become part of the group. Pretty excited myself!!
I looked up the Healthcare International website and it states:
"Although our Expatriate Plans exclude residents in their home countries, cover can be arranged, in many cases on special terms for bespoke schemes, and we can offer cover for all expatriates wherever they are based in the world. Expatriates living in the USA and Canada may be subject to special conditions"
However, the plan benefits as described in the on-line brochure do not meet the requirements for health insurance policies which can be legally offered in the United States as set by the new Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly known as the Health Care Reform law. The Healthcare International policy has lifetime maximums, limits of coverage on certain pre-existing conditions, limits in preventive care, to name a few which are all illegal under the new law.
Caveat emptor.
