Haze in the Air
Is it dust from the Sahara?
Yes, I saw it on the weather channel the other day. The said a large amount of African dust was heading our way.
LOVELY...time to stock up on Claritin
We were there in May a couple of years back and the Sahara dust was bad. We mentioned how it was ruining our pretty vacation view of blue skies to a couple of native St Croix men who were gardeners and they said,'' Nooo! Sahara dust is GOOD. It stops hurricanes from forming!" Sure enough, no hurricanes that year near St Croix or the Gulf Coast. Let's hope they're right about it and it's another slow year this year!
Here is a story from the Source: http://www.onepaper.com/stthomasvi/?v=d&i=&s=News:Local&p=1243829863
When there is dust, there is a high pressure system. When there is high pressure, no storm development. However, there can be a low pressure system chasing right behind...;)
Apparently the dust also keeps the sea's surface temperature slightly lower which is an unfavorable condition for hurricane development.
I sure do miss my beautiful view but I guess I'd rather have fewer hurricanes. As many have said, the dust does often make for spectacular sunrises/sets, so at least that's something...
All this dust must be hard on people with respiratory illnesses, though.
Sahara dust here means whatever comes from Africa, will soon come here.
Let`s all hope for a quiet hurricane season(I know my crappy insurance company does!).
So this dust is finally going. The wind seems to be more from the east than the southeat. The sunsets were ok but I hate this stukk. The screens are dirty, dust is every where in the house and after the little shower last night all that crap is in my cistern, more filters.
was laying out by the pool yesterday and a big jet flew over. i could smell the fumes from the plane. the air was so thick that the fumes lingered. was a sickening smell. but didnt last. just shows how thick this air has been. wonder what we are breathing and drinking. good advice on disconnecting down spouts. we have a uv purifier on water system, think we still need to do this????
It is dust - so not very large particles --- the UV filter won't be affected but if you are running a 1 or 2 Micron particle filter it can get clogged and reduce pressure - most filters start at about 10 Microns and will eventually get clogged but not by the Sahara dust which seems to float on the top of the cistern water, far from your intakes, and slowly settle.
oh yuck. could be elephant poop dust particules in my water now in my tummy.
More likely up your nose as you breathe 24 hours a day - still Yuck!
Elephant Poop! Sorry if it's inappropriate but that strikes me as funny.
Since it is Sahara Dust much more likely it is Camel Dung -- probably on the most dedicated connoisseur could detect the difference.
haze to elephant dropping (being sensitive) ??? wow we need a life lol
