Have ideas for gifts from STT for people in the States?
I actually live in the VI, but I'm wondering what others think are good gifts to take home to people in the States as I bring quite a few gifts when I visit the States.
There's some that I've liked in the past. The t-shirts that are 3-5 for $10. These I usually get from the vendors in tents on Waterfront near the fort. I've also found some in the alleys too.
One year I gave everyone those little hand towels with the islands' map that start off in tiny little compressed containers, and then they put them in water and they expand. I can't remember where I got them, but Captain's Corner is probably a good bet. Kids loved them too, and I really like giving things that are a little educational too, like maps. I also like stuff that makes them want to come visit me!
I tried to give out shells, but Custom's took them. Ooops.
This year I gave out a bunch of the books "Restaurants and Recipes of the Virgin Islands". It had beautiful pictures of all the main restaurants and a recipe from each! These were a really big hit. I ordered them right from the author, Karin Donaldson: 340-714-2450 and werlimin@aol.com, but I have also seen them for sale at other places like the restaurants and at the boutique at Magen's Bay.
Any great ideas for future years?
Oh yeah, I've also already done the rum balls and hot sauces, etc., too. These went over well, especially the rum balls.
I've seen some wine with Sapphire Beach & another location on its labels. It's probably from S. America but the labels are really nice. Also, if you don't want to take big bottles, they sell really small bottles of flavored Cruzan in packs of 8. They're the size of the bottles you get ordering a drink on the plane & would be easy to pack. I've also seen the larger flask size of flavored Cruzan & they come in a pack of maybe 5 or 6.
You can find pirate map puzzles for kids, pirate hats, do-rags & pirate toys.
STT golf balls.
Baseball caps.
Angela Spenceley puts out some good books too. Check out her cookbook & she also has one on drinks.
Coasters.
Placemats.
DVDs of island scenes.
CDs of island music.
Larimar jewelry is everywhere & some of the ear studs are inexpensive.
VI calendars.
Prints of VI maps.
A pen and a journal. (Caribbean theme of course)
That is what I got for my friend and she used it here to write about her visit and took it home to continue keeping the journal, and counting down the days until her next visit.
Reminds me, I better get more as I have visitors coming every month.
Crucian bracelets are memorable. I also love candles from Captain's Corner. I found some at Christmas that were gel like and smelled great. They were inexpensive and had little wooden criss cross stands that you could buy to go with them. Ornaments from St. Thomas are good during the holidays — I love the ones that John's Greetings in town carries. There is also a lady in town who has her own soap shop where she makes homemade soap. It's a soap shop/cyber cafe now. I can't remember which alley she is down, but if you like that idea I will follow up. She is very creative and her soaps smell wonderful.
There are some wonderful local artists on STT. Why not support them by buying Island themed art? We purchased 2 small pieces from The Bambini shop last time we were there. Vincent Bambini is very nice and has large and small pieces. I think a lot of t shirts & shot glasses with St Thomas printed on it really comes from China anyway.
Thanks for all of the great gift ideas, Everyone! I love these boards! Be Well!
Water Island, USVI artist Paul Borghi made the T-shirts with the iguanas on them, and they are definitely for sale at Tickles Restaurant and Bar in Crown Bay. They are excellent. I gave them to people, and they thought they were very cute.
Here is another gift idea for children. The book is not about the Caribbean, but the author lives in St. Thomas and the beautiful picture of the rainbow over the ocean was taken in St. Thomas. (It's kind of fun to guess which islands you can see in the picture.)
The book can be found at http://www.lulu.com/content/320465
Basically the book has a bunch of good deeds that kids do, and they keep a cute little record of what they did and then pass it on to a friend. The kids I gave it to really liked it.
Here is the description of the content of the book from the website:
The Secret Happiness Book is a creative and inviting piece that appeals directly to children and to adults who wish to purchase it for young people as gifts. Created by an educator to entertain young people and to provide character education, The Secret Happiness Book has the goodwill spirit of the movie "Pay It Forward" and of the theme “Commit Random Acts of Kindness and Senseless Beauty”. It has the allure of a secret club and the addictive magnetism of the intrinsic rewards of doing good things. Children will just 'have to have it'. "The Secret Happiness Book" will appeal to educators and religious organizations. A kind of scavenger hunt for the soul, it promotes self-esteem, compassion, and love, with a small dose of responsible, spirited mischief. The author's goal in writing it was to better society as much as it was to entertain her readers.
Oh, I just got a new GREAT new one! One of our very own from St. Thomas, even 'born here'. Oh my gosh, young female writer, Tiphanie Yanique (aka Tiphanie Galiber-Gundel) has always been amazing, but now she has a short story, or "chapbook" as they call it, that has been published by Kore Press. This is a GREAT purchase and great gift. Our Tiphanie is in good company with their short list of published writers, including Gertrude Stein and Ani Difranco and now, Tiphanie Yanique - WOW! 🙂 I just got my copy of it, and I've already ordered more for gifts.
You can get them at: http://www.korepress.org/bios/yanique.htm
Local artists' CD's make great gifts too. You can usually order directly through them for a great price. Many will be appearing this Saturday at the Montessori School Music Fest! (on Saturday, Sept. 29)
Christmas cards and note cards designed by local kids and sold through CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) A very, very worthy cause, and the cards are sold all around the islands. You can check out their site at : www.casavi.org. It doesn't appear to be updated very often, but it will give you an idea of what CASA is about.
Thought of some more: Gail Garrison makes some nice scents as well as bath salts, etc. It's a local product & she's a really nice lady. Her items used to be at Vendor's Plaza but she also has some in some of the stores. Another candle maker sells his candles at Mountain Top & they're great! Come in different sizes & really nice scents. They come in jars like Yankee Candles. I think his name is Chris.
I like these gift ideas. Christmas is a comin and I dont know HOW WILL SANTA GET HERE, but Im getting some of these books and stuff. ho ho ho
