Happy New Year.

here here, Islander. All the best from me and mine to you and yours. May everyone's new year bring fortune and happiness!
...and I'll add on to that "good health" as being paramount.. I hear some fireworks but I still have to load up the dishwasher with a next load... Oh to bed, to sleep and perchance to dream good dreams until tomorrow.
It was "Happy Old Year" tonight but now that tonight is over, HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ONE AND ALL!!!
Okay, so we were long in bed when the New Year arrived....but I have a question for STX'ers....are fireworks not allowed on the island? We dreaded midnight since we have dogs who think we are under nuclear attack if they hear bottle rockets, etc....and we heard NOTHING (which I am LOVING! We're old and cranky, what can I say?)...
Another question - and I hear this is a custom here (?) - on Christmas Eve we liked to have died of mutual heart attacks at about midnight when a caravan of cars being led by a flatbed truck with a steel pan band and assorted instruments passed the house with the amps just kicked up....in my deep slumber, I thought the front door was being kicked in....so the significance would be "what" at midnight? Just a custom, or a bunch of party-goers and revelers?
Still trying to acquaint myself - I'll get it one day!
Consider yourselves lucky--Fireworks went of for almost 20 minutes at lee Rohn's house in Cotton Valley--set off right in a empty lot next to homes--not hers, of course. Her 2 bands and Dj started before midnight, went on at an outrageous sound level till 6 am this morning--police were called at least 4 times between 12:30 and 6, but--guess what---it made no difference--(if they even drove by, which we doubt) which is why no one bothers to call the police..She does some variation of this every year.
Oh, Jane....good grief....so does this mean I put a big "X" on the island map for future homesteads, LOL???
We just didn't see the massive fireworks displays set up like in the states with people swarming like little bees and wondered if they were outlawed....obviously not....although I am sure the STX police were busy trying to get leads on the SIXTEEN homicides they DIDN'T arrest anyone for in 2005. I freakin' do not believe that...16!!!!!???? Out of 24? Can they be content with a 33% solve rate? I am a former police officer/homicide investigator and felt pain in my posterior region from the butt-chewing I would have taken from the Little Rock police chief over those kind of stats!
Maybe we need to grant leave time so the detectives and officers can go home and watch Lenny on Law and Order? HAHAHA!
There were fireworks going off over Ft. C'sted as well. Without Indian reservations for people to go buy fireworks any time of the year like happens on the mainland, you don't have teenage boys setting off firecrackers and such here as part of their "celebration" of the holiday. Instead, larger fireworks displays are arranged by a few individuals and organizations.
