In between bites of ribs, potato salad and BBQ beans - sorry for the irreverence 🙂

Remembering those that have fallen and their families too!

The Memorial Concert last night in DC was beautiful. The story told by the two widows was quite memorable.

Pamela,
Silence is better than to say something stupid! Those Men and Women died for you. God Bless our Hero's.

I heard this on the radio this morning, and it is very sad but also very true............."Memorial Day was once a Day of remembrance which happened to be a holiday. Sadly, now Memorial Day is a Holiday which happens to be a day of remembrance."

Also, I heard the radio spot run by Lowes this week, personally I thought it was a disgrace. "Memorial Day is for barbecues and home projects" was the theme of the commercial.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Lt. Col John McCrae

A lot went through my mind to rebut that silly statement - stupid is a stupid says - but I realized that is what it is all about. Because of our fallen war heros we are all allowed our own opinions, freedom of speech and our way of saying thanks to everyone who helped secure this freedom. If you spent your day selling poppies for veterans and doing good works then bless you. I spent my celebrating the freedom that has been secured from people involved in wars - those I believed in and those I protested against.

Hey EE - I know the poem refers to WWI, but my dad's dad died in WWII on a battlefield in Belgium (Flanders!)

And Pamela - My grandfather would be pleased that so many folks honor the sacrifice of those who died in battle by spending the day with good friends, good food and plenty of fun! 🙂

Any day that honors the memory of those who serve this wonderful country means so much to me and them. I am older and grew up listening to stories of WW2, Korea and Vietnam both from Veterans and the wives at home who supported them. Times are different now and I wish that they were not. I come from a long line of those brave men and now women. I have so many thoughts on this but really don't know how to express it other than we are all so lucky to have been born in the most wonderful country in the world and those brave people who defend our way of life are incredible.

Our country's freedom and the conflicts which secured it have touched all of us in one way or another. We have all suffered losses of our friends and families in the name of freedom. I honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. I can only hope that peace and reason prevail and bring an end to all war.so we may all enjoy the fruits of the fallen.
peace

As a veteran, I'm not happy at the turn this thread is taking. Pamela made a joke. Are we all so thin-skinned, we are offended at a little joke. I have many friends on the Wall in Washington. They get remembered often. I don't need a special day for that. Pamela, I saw the humor in your comment. I also saw the sadness in it. Lizard, a word of advice from an old man, don't take everything so seriously.

RIC,
Many of those men I held in my Arms, There is no humor in that.. They deserve better than that! A little advice from someone older, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and I will always take that seriously and if you don't like it TB.
