From the US Virgin Islands Police Department Facebook Page:
ST. CROIX POLICE CHIEF CHRISTOPHER HOWELL AND POLICE OFFICER
SHOT WHILE IN PURSUIT OF ROBBERY SUSPECTS SATURDAY ON ST. CROIX
St. Croix Police Chief Christopher Howell and Police Officer Elsworth Jones were injured by gunfire on Saturday night while pursuing suspects in an armed robbery of a Cane Bay restaurant. Howell and Jones had established a roadblock in close proximity to the Mon Bijou community when they encountered suspects fitting the description of those that had minutes before held up the Eat at Cane Bay restaurant.
Police authorities confirmed that both Howell and Jones were fired upon and injured by gunfire. Both were transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital where they were treated for what was described as “non-life threatening injuries.” Howell and Jones were in stable condition late Saturday night.
Residents in the area told police that some seven to ten shots were fired at the two officers. Lt. Governor Gregory Francis and Police Commissioner Henry White met with the injured officers at the Luis Hospital on Saturday night.
Governor John P. de Jongh Jr. praised the work of Howell and Officer Jones who within minutes of the robbery set up a traffic checkpoint and challenged the apparent suspects. “I express my deep appreciation to both Chief Howell and Officer Jones for the work they and so many VIPD officers do on the front lines every day. It is clearly unfortunate when officers, on the front line of defending our community, become victims. This pattern of attack against those who have sworn to uphold law and order in our community is not acceptable by me or by our community,” de Jongh said.
The governor was regularly updated on the condition of the two injured officers and the effort that continued late Saturday night to apprehend the suspects wanted in the robbery and subsequent shooting. The suspects were described as black males wearing dark colored clothing.
hope they are okay. so does this mean that the bad guys were caught or did they get away.
Ecliff at 54 was murdered. good news about the cops being alive.
there were also a ton of cops at sharkys when I drove by last night.
This is insane. I hope the best for everyone that was injured but come on the gun violence here is out of control. If the VIPD cannot take care of the problem then they need to ask for help from the feds. It is not fair to let the good people of St Croix be terrorized by a bunch of thugs. It is time to send a message to these people that these types of acts will not be tolerated. We can not let the bad guys win. Any ideas?
Is it time for a curfew?
seems so
no. it'll get better. it may get worse at first, but it will improve. things like curfews and restrictions don't always get lifted after they're instated.
would that be a bad thing?
Is it time for a curfew?
😮
Is there a state of emergency here that requires a curfew??? I don't think so. Why kill what remains of our local night life?? The state of Colorado did not declare a curfew whan a gunman recently killed A DOZEN people at a theatre while seriously injuring ABOUT SIXTY MORE...get a grip, OK?? Arizona did not go on lockdown when a gunman shot and killed SIX people and almost killed a CONGRESSWOMAN.
These robberies on the North Shore are not about getting some measley dollars from patrons. They are about scaring people who want to create what is perceived as monochromatic hangouts.
Flame on.
I think you are giving the scum involved too much credit. I think it is all about trying to get a few dollars and it seems to me that successful but somewhat remote businesses are among the best places to find money with a minimal risk of being caught. But I do agree that you need to keep it in perspective. There are just a small group of people committing the robberies, not hundreds. I am confident there are armed patrons at Club 54 every weekend, yet shootings there are relatively rare. When you mix people and too much alcohol, arguments and confrontations are probably inevitable. And if the people involved have guns, sometimes things can escalate out of control. But all we are talking about is a handful of people out of a population of 55000 or so on STX causing the recent violent crime issues. But a curfew - really? The police officers getting shot is the type of thing that will initiate a crackdown on crime. An increase in the random police checkpoints is probably an easy starting point too. Unfortunately, many of the same people who bitch about the crime will also be the ones bitching about being inconvenienced by the efforts of the police to do something about the crime.
A curfew would do no good. Criminals break the law, why do you think they would abide by a curfew? But its true we are not in a state of emergency here. The problem is that these thugs are not scared of the police here. They are not afraid of getting caught. Why do you think they are shooting at people in the middle of the day? Obviously they do it because they know they can! They will do what they want to do when they want to do and where they want to do it. The VI police are obviuosly a joke to them at this point, and the police had better act fast to send a message to these thugs. If they can shoot the chief of police and get away with it, then they will feel like they are invincible. The police need to take proactive measures to get the guns out of the hands of criminals and to stop the robberies. In addition to that the people need to be more cooperative in helping solve crimes. Too many times something happens and nobody saw anything and nobody knows anything.
As far as the robberies not being about money, I dont buy it. Why did they try and rob Pastry Hut then? There have plenty of robberies at non hangout spots.
A small difference between both shootings in Colorado and Arizona and the killings and robberies in the VI. The suspects in both those shootings were apprehended and will never see the light of day again or kill anyone else, your killers walk free among you all free to continue to kill and rob. Hell, even when they are lucky enough to catch one(even a broken clock is right twice a day) they get a slap on the wrist or a great plea deal.
Ah Paradise. Rum makes everything bearable it seems. Denial is what most of you are suffering from. What goes on there is not normal. Good luck and keep your head down.
Flame Away, i know the truth is hard to hear.

So what's the solution?
It should be interesting to see what happens since two (2) cops have been shot.
You know what is sad? No one asked about the people at Eat at Cane Bay? How are they? Anyone hurt or just traumatized? WTH is wrong with us?
Even the police didn't report anything that I saw about them. Does anyone know?
peeps are ok at eats
they shot up the floor and roof
ruffed up the bartender a little
stole a car...
solution is we all arm our selves
shoot first and ask questions later
maybe the thugs will get the message after a few of them gets shot up
open to any better ideas if u have one
So sad. I hope the people are all ok and good luck to the officers. 🙁
