You might as well sell your gun before you get here. Unless you own a business or have another very compelling reason, its highly unlikely that you would get a permit.

not a cc permit but at least a home permit. where you will keep it in a locked safe with no bullets in it

A Concealed Carry bill is under consideration by the legislature committee. They had a hearing today, but it may probably need amendments before it goes to full senate.

Ha, ha! Yes, a real cc, but determining who would be eligible has to be determined. Lots more work needed before they have a "good" bill, though when it comes to guns, is there a good bill?

I'll be bringing my gun, so I want to be prepared before I get there.

There is section S485-8 in that document, entitled "Processing of firearm obtained outside the Virgin Islands", which appears to be applicable to you. From the way it's worded, it seems that your firearm would be confiscated upon you entering Virgin Islands.

If you want to carry concealed in your life time move to Florida. I took a 28 hour class including qualification and had a CCW three weeks later. That will never happen in the VI.

yeah, hubby had one in florida before we moved here. i dont mind the extra classes and stuff but i do mind the restrictions

It won't if you don't ask the legislature for it. I thought the discussion in the legislature needed more public input from voters, but only one was there and that person didn't speak.

I'll bet the people who own the gun training businesses on both islands would love a conceal permit, and they should have testified to have classes built into the bill. Like I said, bill needed work, and not sure of status. I don't even think press was there, so de people dem may never know status or if they can still submit opinions.

Interestingly enough, FL offers a non resident CCW permit that can be used not only in FL but also in all of the states that accept FL reciprocity. Several years ago I mailed the appropriate paperwork from here (STX) to FL and within weeks had my nonresident CCW permit, which works in about 34 states, so when I visit I can carry if I want to in most of the states I tend to visit. The VI does not have reciprocity with FL so it won't work here, but I coupled with a VI permit, which I also applied for and received, I can technically carry here and when I am stateside, as long as I notify the airline and package for shipping appropriately, I can transport my firearm and ammunition to my stateside destination, carry freely there, and then return, all legally and as a civilian. I share this to say that while there are different hurdles here compared to the requirements of some places stateside, it can and does happen in the VI. And for the record, my CCW course here only took a few hours, so some of the steps may be easier here.

Out of curiosity, have any of you applied and been rejected for either home protection or a carry permit? I found the VIPD firearms division to be very professional in my dealings with them.

So you are saying that in the VI you take a four hour class you are granted a CCW? In Fla. there is twenty hours of class room before you spend eight hours at the police range.

In regard to training, all that was required for me to get both the VI and FL permits was proof of having completed a firearm safety course. No hour requirement was stated. I have friends in FL who have also knocked out the requirement in an afternoon. Maybe the recommended course is more stringent in your area.

I took the class in Florida last summer. The class lasted two hours and involved firing one shot at a target to demonstrate that you at least knew which end of the pistol to point at a target.

Once you have the certificate from the class you make an appointment with the state for an interview/ photo/ fingerprints, pay your money and you are an armed citizen.

Even without a carry permit in Florida you are allowed to have a loaded pistol in your car to fight off car jackers, etc.

Well I did take the Florida G license course which automatically qualifies you for a CCW. The G course covers firearms safety in depth along with Florida statutes on deadly force and concealment. I held an open carry permit in NJ and had prior experience with guns however I opted for the more intense training. After not holding a firearm for more that twenty years I qualified with a 227 out of 240. So the extra class time was worth it.

Firing one shot at a target is nonsense IMHO. Because all that does teach you is which end the bullet exits from. You must have attended one of those fly by night schools that sits you in a room and turns on a video and the instructor leaves the room. Florida is cracking down on such "schools" and you may have to qualify for real when they figure it out and revoke your permit.
