growing veggies in STX?
Has anyone had success growing veggies here? I was wondering how the climate helps or sustains growing periods? What veggies flourish there etc...Also how's spear fishing there, cost of fish at markets etc? We are really into the organics and are trying to figure out all angles of STX> Thanks.....
Hi Banda,
There are actually a few farmers on STX and many people who dabble in growing food plants. There is a Farmers' Market every Sat. morning and vendors set up alongside the road most days, so the answer is yes, you can grow veggies. You might need to bring in topsoil to get started. I don't know if you need to be on a certain side of the island to be successful. I moved to STX in March, from St. Thomas. When I arrived every vendor had honest-to-God, home-grown tomatoes. There was even a "tomato event" up in the rain forest. Some things are still seasonal, and you might get fresh "local" veggies out of a box from the venders at certain times of year.
There is a regular poster here, DanielB, who is an horticulturalist. Maybe he will see this thread and be able to give you some better info.
Juanita your a doll !!! Thanks for the info!!
Me and My wife will be permanent residents to STX very soon!! We are building an "earthship" one if the most non using fossil fuel-off the grid- inexpensive - energy efficient home one can own!! Google "earthships" and read also check out you tube they have a few nice vids there too!!
Thx again.....
Bob

How did the permitting process for the 'earthship" go?
Jane,
Hi we haven't applied in STX as of yet . However there are many different set of plans pre-engineered to as even the most stringent building department would fine more then sufficient..."over built" to say the least.. even for hurricane applications especially with 3 foot thick walls....
Even here in Az "paradise valley" their permitting department are ecstatic over them. I have had many conversation with owners around the globe and all have had great success! I will keep you posted...
Bob

Bob
You're in for an enlightening experience down here, Banda. Best of luck to you.
I would be astonished if you got a permit for an earthship down here. Absolutely astonished. Please do try, it'd be very exciting to have one on the island. I love them.
I'd be willing to email you the building code in .pdf format so you could take a look and think about it. PM me your email if you want.
