Hi All,

I have read postings concerning the cost of veggies. My question is:
Can you grow your own yr round,or do the chickens, bugs, eat them?
Can you buy potting soil at KMart, Sams?
We can buy milk at KMart here in Florida. There? Or is it local milk, and does it need to be Ice Cold for it to taste good??
Can you buy fish, lobster from locals? $$?
AND the next 2 questions are a bit grotesque but I got to know.
If you buy historic property, is there a chance that they have family plots on them? IF so, Are they marked?
The Big Wind question: If you're smart enough to get to a shelter, chances of you expiring? zero to none? 2 to 5,000.? When you come out, more likely the wind took your belongings, or looting to the not so smart ones still alive???

These are for the island of St. Croix.

Thanks,
Kathy

Hello,

Vegetables - there are quite a few persons that grow their own produce for personal consumption. This is the way it was done many years ago, baically on all the Caribbean Islands. Although it is not the mainstream practice nowadays you can join the few that do it for a hobby, for fun or to have garden fresh produce. On St. Croix the temperature is favorable for planting all year round. Some months have more rain then others, so perhaps you shoud follow rain fall as a guide for when to plant, especially for veggies that like water. Bugs as like anywhere else, exist, and can cause a treat to tomatoes, mangos.... anything really, they need to eat too and why not a fresh veggi or fruit. We have no Sams Club. You can buy potting soil from K-mart or from a garden section of other stores. St. Croix has an agriculture economy (along with other means), yes there are cows there, quite a few, and a dairy, and local milk that taste great! You can by local fish, lobster, crab, conch, octopus, welks... and whatever else they legally catch and sell from the local fishermen. Cost depends on item. I suppose it is not impossiable that a piece of land might have unmarked graves on it, not necessarily from family plots either, they might be Indian graves and Indian sites as well. Several years back on St. Thomas an Indian site including burials was unearthed by bulldozers during development. In forest on the island there are a few marked sites, often part of a passed sugar plantation site. As for the hurricane (Big wind) question, it is not necessary to go to a shelter UNLESS you have reason to believe that your home is not sturdy enough to windstand the storm. Many people stay at home. I have been through several hurricanes, home is cement through in through and I had not really considered that the winds would effect a cement building (again many not impossiable but not likely). Of course the winds would effect glass windows ... so you board these up nice and tight. Now there are homes that are not strong, and if you should find yourself in one, or a home that has lots of glass and you think that perhaps the home is not safe then by all means go to a shelter. Deaths in hurricanes have happened, not common at homes or shelters (although I recall perhaps a heart attack not sure)... usually they occured on boats, people who choose to stay on their boats and ride out the storm. More likely that you will loose your things in the wind then to looters.

Good Luck with your move.
