Grocery Query
Is there a grocery item you've sought and scoured the island to find, something you think would obviously be in any grocery store but isn't here?
Red Vines Licorice
Contadina Sweet N Sour Sauce
A Taste of Thai - Peanut Sauce mix
Hoisin Sauce
Coleman's dry mustard
Mystic Mint cookies 🙂
Pork flavored Maruchan Ramen
assorted kinds of candy bars that my sons like
good Beef Jerky
artichokes
pretzel sticks (much better than the twisted ones!)
boneless pork roast
Comstock blueberry and raspberry toppings
Orange sherbet
Alexandra- don't know about your Plaza Xtra on the big island but the STT branch carries the Taste of Thai peanut sauce, Hoisin and Colman's Mustard and the butcher will also make up a boneless pork roast on request. I think some of the other things are also carried there.
I buy the Colman's from my food supplier in the 16 oz size - want me to mail you one? PM me if so!
I've found the peanut sauce here twice in nearly 3 years. My sister sent me some for Xmas and then I bought a case when I was on the mainland in February and the mustard and Hoisin as well. I'll have to see if the Plaza butcher here will consider deboning the pork sometime. I get them from Costco on San Juan now and then when we make a supply run for my fiance's business. The cut of meat is different than what Plaza carries here.
It's rather amusing to shop for sundries on the mainland and then bring them back on the plane. The TSA bag checker had a hilariously funny look on his face when he opened my carry-on to figure out what in the heck it was he was seeing on the scanner. I could see him puzzling out what I could possibly be cooking with that combination of ingredients.
Ric likes a certain brand of tea and when I go back to Kentucky I always stock up. I usually have a suitcase full of tea, vitamins, and assorted other stuff! You do get some strange looks at TSA.
I remember the weekend my husband and I chased all over the island for a pizza crust, pizza dough, or anything resembling round bread - it seemed so simple at the time and turned into the weekend joke. Come to find out, everyone was just out...I see them all the time (now that I'm not craving)!
Anyone like Big Train Chai Tea? Not gonna be here, or at least that I've found - if anyone knows of any at a specialty shop on STX, please do tell. I ordered 25 lbs. of it, the post office didn't put a pick up slip in my box, and so it went back. The supplier is agitated with me and can't understand....I can hardly understand myself, as the post office has also done a "return to sender" on vast quantities of my mail, including paychecks...
Cavender's Greek Seasoning - I think the only place I found it was Food Town. One time. Am quite unsure of how to cook without it, and Adobo just isn't right.
Boneless pork roast - yum - I'd settle for bone-in at this point.
Campbell's Beefy Mushroom soup for cooking.
FRESH Reese's peanut butter cups...I can pick a bad one a mile away!
Miniature marshmallows that are NOT all stuck together into one big, sticky lump!!!! Christmas was tuff this year, no fruit salad (heavenly hash we call it).
Boudins Sourdough bread, or something equally as good. I am sure I will have a few more things to add to this list as time goes on.
Great question Dntw8up! Do you think you will be able to procure some of these items and make them available to us on a regular basis :)?
99 cent gallon of whole milk! LOL
Diet Ginger Ale
Edamame
Snyders Hard Pretzels
UTZ potato chips
Smart Food White Cheddar Cheese Popcorn
Peach Fresca
Diet Faygo
Edamame can be found (sometimes) in the frozen section of Food Center.
Diet Ginger ale you can also get at Food Center (STT)
Best,
LR
They almost always have Edamame in the frozen section of Marina Market in Red Hook
Dr. Pepper
they have Dr. Pepper at Cost U Less most of the time.
It's all two of my sons wanted to drink before they got here. One soon switched to Cherry Coke and another was wild about one of the Sprite Remix products that didn't stay in the stores long. Oh, well. Then there's the mutant one who drinks Mt. Dew. Ick.
I just wish Diet Pepsi were drinkable here and didn't taste like acid. I had to switch to Diet Coke after a lifetime of faithfulness to Pepsi. One of those island adjustments!
The Presidente is pretty good, too...
Unfortunately, I'm in STX....
Unfortunately? Oh, come on now.....
Think of all the people living in miserable places around the world who would LOVE to be here on STX. Even if they can't get edamame and Diet Ginger Ale without making a day trip to STT.
Blue Bell Ice Cream
Wolf Brand Chili
Rotel Tomatos - - i stock up when i do find them
Dr. Pepper is rough to find when you crave it
A&W Cream Soda
Tony Chachere's Seasonings - sometimes they are at gourmet gallery
small stateside avacodos, not big west indian ones, can be hard to find at times
Agv,
You must be from Texas!!! Until I got to YOUR post I thought I would make it on the island considering the items people wanted and couldnt get, but blue bell and wolf chili are pushing it abit!!
haha!
Thanks for the warning! I am also from Texas and will be moving to STT in July. I will be sure to bring RO-Tel, Wolf Brand and Velveeta.
A.M. I didn't mean anything by the "unfortunately I'm in STX" comment ---- simply meant, I wasn't in STT which I thought the poster thought.......... OF COURSE, I'm happy to be in STX!!! Be careful what you read into a post.........
that's what I thought you meant. I was just teasing!
