graphic design market on STT
Hi all --
We're still about a year away from our anticipated move to STT, so my questions here are, I'm sure, just beginning!
I'm a graphic designer of printed publications, freelance for the past 10 years, and producing things like books, brochures, posters, etc. I'm guessing that with all of the tourism on STT, there would be a market for someone with my skills -- does anyone have any insight into this? Is it difficult for someone who does layout & graphic design to break into the market on the island?
I can do web design also, but it's not really my strong spot.
We have two boys, ages 7 and 9, and being freelance has been a wonderful way for me to be there for getting them to and from school, sports, etc., and schedule my work hours around all that. I'd love to be able to continue to do so on St. Thomas if I can make it work.
Thanks,
Angie
hi Angie
I'm a graphic designer living on St Croix. I freelanced for a couple of years and now I'm employed full time for an "EDC" company but I still have some freelance accounts. Although I don't live on St Thomas I know the market fairly well. Yes, there are lots of opportunities on St Thomas but there also are lots of graphic artists! St Thomas fortunately has several ad agencies and design studios, from small to large (for the islands, anyway!) Some of the big names are Austin Advertising, MLB Creative, and Infinity Plus One Advertising & Design. There are also smaller studios and freelancers. From my experience on St Croix, word of mouth is important—I got most of my freelance accounts that way. One thing I would suggest is to join the Advertising Club of the Virgin Islands—it's a great way to meet other creative people and potential clients. If you want more information, once you get closer to your move, you could send me a private email—I'd love to help out a fellow graphic artist!
Thank you, Joan -- your reply and advice are very helpful! I'm hopeful that I'll be able to find some work on the island -- and with the Internet, I'm crossing my fingers that I might be able to keep some of my work from the mainland, since most everything happens electronically anyway.
I'll save your email and be in touch as the timeline closes in. Thanks again!
Angie
