Goods inside car
I apologize if this has already been covered.. I search but havent found a similar question after a search..
I'm familiar with what it takes to ship a car from other threads.
Is it common practice to ship items inside your vehicle from the mainland? One company I contacted said that they allow it for an additional $600 but "it was at your own risk." Are break-ins to cars enroute or sitting at the port common? I'd like to throw in some things that arent ultra valuable like clothes, kitchen stuff, stereo speakers but at what point and how does customs tax these items shipped inside a car?
Do they search for a replacement cost on my blender and tax me?
thanks
As I understand the current rules, cars must be shipped empty. I would question anyone who says you can ship a loaded car.
I agree with Linda J. I cannot believe the shipping companies have changed back to pre-9/11 when you could load up you car with whatever you wanted. The 9/11 disaster in NYC changed everything --nobody trusts anybody anymore -- it's all about Homeland Security issues.
When I shipped a car from FL to STX in Jan 2007, I was told by both Crowley and Tropical, you cannot pack anything in the car. The car being shipped had to arrive the shipping port with a NO MORE than a 1/4 tank of gas left in the fuel tank & the only things allowed in the car were the spare tire & the owners manual.

I've only known two people who have shipped a vehicle to the island. One was a motorcycle, that made it just fine, and the other was a brand new Dodge truck. The truck arrived semi-stripped, so I would suggest looking to insurance for the shipping.
Thanks guys
Call VI Cargo and ask them. 340.778.6331 I've used Crowley before and I wouldn't again if I could avoid it. Good luck.

I found this to be true shipping my Jeep to St. Croix (2006). When I went to get my car it was sitting unlocked at the pier, and had been rifled through. A flashlight I had in the glove compartment was gone. I wouldn't even put clothing in there if I were you.
There was an article in the Daily News this morning about the feds finding $1.35 million cash in a car on a cargo ship in Puerto Rico...;)
Damn, they found my stash!!?
Where do I go to claim my money?
I shipped a Truck down with Crowly about a year and a half ago with no issues. Tropical said absolutely no items and I kind of talked Crowley into it and they informed me of the risk. I bought a camper top just for the move and packed the bed full of items. After inspection in Florida I locked the camper and gave them a key just in case customs had to get into it. Covered the the valuable items (generator and tools) with a boxes of junk and it made it to STX with no problems.
Maybe I was just lucky but it paid off.
We shipped a truck last March. They stole several items that were mounted inside the truck as well as items locked in the toolbox. They stole every penny they could find as well as cds. I don't know where it was stolen but I doubt it was stolen stateside in Jacksonville,fl. I hear it gets stolen here when it arrives. The flashlight was mounted underneath the dash and wired through the dash to the battery. I wouldn't be surprised if they would steal your radio if they wanted it. Usually these items are not insured when shipping. We used Seastar and Tropical.
I heard the items gets stolen when the barge stops in Puerto Rico.
No items in my car. Except for the car manual, a few small non-valuable items in arm rest. Crowley wouldn't let me have anything in my trunk. I had to remove my fishing pole. All I have is the bobber. :@)
I insured my car. Just in case. One never knows.
