Good ways to meet people when first moving here?

I know it can be a busy time getting settled in when first arriving but once you get into your routine, there are lots of ways to meet people besides new drinking buddies at the local hangouts. My favorite is the Humane Society of STT:

http://www.hsstt.com/

Lots of ways to help out & even if you can't have a pet in your new home there are animals that need to be walked, played with, etc. I've helped out when I could but just be careful, they may try to get you on the Board (which I've successfuly avoided thus far) but that can be a rewarding experience, too, I'm quite sure. And they have a great flea market where you can maybe find some stuff to help decorate your sparsely "furnished" apartment.

Of course, there are active shelters on STX & STJ who could use your help, too.

Lots of other volunteer opportunities on all the islands. I hope you residents will post yours.

Oh Trade, these are wonderful ways to get around, explore the islands, meet the neighbors and help to feel "settled in". I might have to check a few of these out on my next visit... there's only so much beach time I can stand at one time!

And, for old farts like me this will be a wonderful excuse.... I mean reason, to get away from the daily grind of yard work and house maintenance.

Thanks much...

Nobody'd complain if you picked up a coconut retriever or two while you're at it, Eng. 😉

Trade, that is an excellent website! Such a great idea to suggest something so positive for new people to get involved with, rather than the drink, drink, party, party that so often happens. I'm too far away to be able to help now, but I work fund-raisers here, and organized one back home for IFAW, so please PM me if you want any ideas.

Really, Sabrina? You sound like you'd have some great ideas to help out the Shelters. I think there's a contact email there & they could probably use your long-distance help with some new ideas for the fund-raising committee.

There are lots of other volunteer ideas also down here that many nice people are involved in. Habitat for Humanity is another for you guys or gals with tool belts.

There is a Rotaract Club at UVI and several Interact clubs at the high school level.

The two clubs are formed in the schools sort of like Junior Rotary Clubs. They do the same thing basically, that Rotary does, at the school level.
