Hi All:

Can anyone recommend a place to purchase moderately priced carpeting with installation? I don't love carpeting in this climate, but in a few roomd it seems like the most expedient alternative. Also, recommended types of carpet?

Best,

Lola

Only place I can think of is Floor Factory in Sub Base. Not sure if they still sell it. Good Luck!

probably Floor Specialists too, they sell it in stx. Think you should reconsider though unless it is in a full time AC location--what about a laminate floor?

I don't think I've ever SEEN carpeting in a home here! Rugs, sure, but wall-to-wall? That's a tuff question! Try the above mentioned...if they don't sell it, they might know who does..if anyone...if no one does, try e-Bay and install it yourself, or hire a contractor to install it. Try Andy at ALL Construction 340.643.4051.

Thanks, Marti and Sherri. I've actually got a couple of areas that already have ANCIENT carpeting, and up until now I've ignored it as all other spaces have lovely tile. Under the carpet is padding, then a thin subfloring, then concrete. I hope to achieve for the short term an attractive look with fresh carpet while trying to match or coordinate new tile with the existing tile (some small, intricate pattern that I don't think originated here, or if it did, it was a long time ago.)

Best,

Ilo

Thanks, beachy. Laminate flooring is increasingly seeming like the thing to do for a relatively quick floor fix. There is AC in the two carpeted areas, but it won't be going all the time.

Its pretty easy to install yourself too, if you're handy and have a decent radial arm saw (I think that's what we used to make the cuts, do it outside, it is messy dust). Put the underlayment down too.

islandlola,
When putting in new tile with existing tile, change the pattern and this will look much nicer as it still separates the 2 areas attractively (we have done this). I do have to say tho, that we almost wish we had torn up the existing tile so all was the same. So, as it stands now, the kitchen, bathroom and entrance area are all of the old tile, the living area and Bedroom area are of another. Shows nice separation, but I think all of the same tile would be nicer.
I too, would not recommend carpeting, but this is a personal choice!

Thanks, Sherri. Your suggestion to use two different tiles is a good one, and one that I may end up going with, as I really love the exisiting tile in the rest of the house. I wish I could think of some cool, attractive, not too expensive flooring alternative, even if temporary. One friend suggested sanding the floor to smooth it out after removing the carpet then painting it or acid washing it . I've seen that done in stateside playrooms or basements, but not sure how that would look in the main part of a house here. Hmm.

If you do a google search for concrete acid stain, you will find several sites with pictures. What can be done is absolutely unbelievable. The process sounds fairly simple, like something you could do yourself, if you could practice in the closets or somewhere out of sight. Trouble is, I haven't been able to locate the product on STX, and it can't be shipped from the companies I contacted. I'll be on STT next week, so I'll check with Home Depot and others.

Thanks, Juanita. I have a friend packing some boxes for me up in the states; I wonder if this stuff is shippable? (I have shipped liquids before, but I wonder if this may fall into that "hazardous" category that they keep asking about in that spiel you get at the post office before shipping ?) I'll have her check on it, though.

Definitely not shippable. Check HD otherwise it will have to come by boat.
