Good Hope School to Close, Merges with Country Day
This just in...
June 25, 2013
Dear parents, teachers, alumni, and friends of Country Day,
For nearly five decades Country Day School has proudly served St. Croix and provided thousands of students with an extraordinary educational experience. This past year has been a testament to the strength and resolve of this community. As has been the case throughout the history of this school, we have endured adversity and difficulties by pulling together and supporting each other.
During the past several months Country Day Board of Trustees has been engaged in discussions with the Good Hope School Board of Trustees to explore the possibility of combining our two schools. We are pleased to announce that Country Day and The Good Hope School have committed to combine our collective resources in to one new school.
While there are many details yet to be worked out, here are the main points that I would like you to understand:
1. When the 2013-2014 school year opens, the combined school will be known as Good Hope Country Day School.
2. The newly combined Good Hope Country Day School campus will be located at the Country Day location.
3. The Board of Trustees of the Good Hope Country Day School will consist of representatives from both schools.
4. The Head of Good Hope Country Day School will be Bill Sinfield.
5. The contracts of all Country Day faculty, administration, and support staff will be honored.
6. Every effort will be made to fill open positions with appropriately qualified Good Hope employees.
We recognize that there will be bumps on the road we are about to travel; however, I would like to offer a few reasons for proceeding on this journey. First, a combined school will create a larger, stronger and more financially sustainable organization. Second, a combined school will provide more access to a broader range of funding sources. Third, and to my mind, most importantly, a combined school will allow us to add greater value to our services. Indeed, the motivation for combining our two schools is to provide St. Croix the very best college-preparatory program in the Caribbean. As parents and educators, we share this noble vocation of raising children and preparing them to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Our loyalties must be directed toward the students in our care.
There is much work to do. In the coming weeks we will have many details to provide to our collective community. We look forward to updating you.
Sincerely,
Bill Sinfield Gerry Groner
Headmaster Chairperson, CDS Board of Trustees
i guess it was just a matter of time
Wow....this is very interesting from a historical perspective. Good Hope School kind of evolved from Country Day, with the financial backing of Hess. I read in the Daily News articles from back then that some of the Hess parents didn't agree with the direction of Country Day and decided to form their own school with the backing of Leon Hess. And now years later with refinery now gone, both schools decide to merge. I'm glad that both school's boards were able to work together and merge. I wonder what's going to happen to the Good Hope campus.
Here's the letter from the Good Hope Board http://www.ghsvi.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Letter-from-the-Board.pdf
Thanks for sharing the GHS letter Cruz.
The split from Country Day occurred around this same time 46 years ago. And now 46 years later both schools merge back into one.
The link below is the archived Daily News article from 1967, in case any one was interested. The article talks about the split and how Good Hope School was tied into Hess. And we all can see now that with Hess gone, it means Good Hope School is gone too,
