Golf Clubs & Bikes
After a couple weeks off, I'm back to working on sorting out what to bring with us to STX, what to sell and what to donate. My current issue is what to do with the golf clubs and bikes. Both we would love to have when we're down there but are not easy to ship. How hard would it be to pick up a set of used clubs or used bikes once we're there?
Thanks for your opinions.

If you check at the the pro shops of the three golf courses on STX you probably can find some clubs that will suit you. It will be tougher if you are left handed and/or tall. Many more golfers than cyclists on STX.
Finding a used bike will be tougher if you want something nice. There is a small, but active cycling community that race and do triathlons. The co-op can order you a new bike from Trek. As far as I know they don't have any used bikes for sale, but they might know someone who has one they are selling. Cyclists tend to collect bikes. I have four on STX and three stateside. Not many casual cyclists on STX riding inexpensive bikes because riding a bike here is hard work. Steep hills and strong headwinds.
If the bike you have is steel don't bother bringing it. It won't hold up in this climate. The tubes will rust from the inside. Also if you are not a strong hill climber you will want either a triple crank or a compact double so you can get some low gears. A twenty seven or twenty nine tooth cog is nice to have in the rear.

You can also get proline or quality clone golf clubs shipped from many differnt internet sources. Great products, great prices.
If you like your clubs, bring them with you. They can obviously be checked as baggage. I don't know much about bikes, but if you're familiar with our terrain and think your bike is a good fit, bring it too. It can be checked as baggage too, if packaged right. Over sized and overweight fees usually run about $50.00 per box.
When you check with the airline be aware everyone tells you something different. Be diligent about getting the information you need. I made about 6 phone calls to US Air about bringing a small table as baggage and got 6 different answers. When I finally got the answer I wanted, I wrote down her name, employee number, time and date of conversation, etc. As it turned out, I didn't need it.....they charged less at the check in than I was quoted by any of the 6.
FYI: Airlines often charge $100 to check a bike. With cheap fares they need to make money any way they can.
