Gnats - what do you do?

Good morning;
I came home last night around 1:00a.m.my outside light was on and many various bugs were around my front door and porch light, came in fast and shut the door - and turned on the light in the living room.
Hundreds of gnats flying around the light and all throughout the living room.
I also had turned on the kitchen lights - and they were all over the cabinet doors, lights flying around, etc.
I think they are gnats - small black insect -they don't bite but it is very annoying.
I managed to kill them most of it anyway, with the bug spray.
I am from Texas, so I have seen some bugs, but not as much as I have seen here.(too many various types)
I have seen gnats around outside - open area with lights, but I never experienced it in the house.
I have screens all around the windows, back door.
My apartment is on the North East side of the island above Mandahl.
Not sure if this is something that I need to discuss with my landlord about it?
Does anyone know what you can do to keep this from happening again?
Would appreciate any and all advise.

Did they shed wings? If so, they might be termites from a rain-soaked nest that collapsed. They're drawn to light when that happens.

yeah, sounds like termite swarm to me, they squeeze right through screens. very determined. if they dropped wings, that's what you had.

Hello:
No, these are not termites.
I found out what termites are. (has wings - brown color, right? and drops the wing or shed wings.)
These are much smaller and do not drop wings -
Looks almost like ants, but has wings and flies but don't bite.
But do land on you and crawl -
I think these are same as the ones you see out on the lightpost sworming around????
Might bit little larger than that -
I think they only comes out at night and likes lights.
Maybe I need to keep my outside lights turned off as lights attracts them?
But when I came in, inside lights were turned off -totally dark.
I opened the front door, jumped inside and closed the door, lock it and turned off the outside lights.
Then I turned on the living room light/ceiling fan walked around to kitchen and turned on that light/ceiling fan.
I can see living room from kitchen - that is when I noticed them - then I saw on my kitchen cabinets, refer, walls-
they were everywhere - but in the hallway and bathroom and bedroom where lights were not on - there weren't any.
Spent half of the night trying to kill them and spent remainder worried about them crawling on me. Yukky feeling.
This is the first time I had this problem and I have had this apartment for over a year.
Don't know if it will be back tonight or is there any way to prevent them?
Help - any ideas?

I think I'd get a bug bomb. I've never had anything like that. Might want to speak to your landlord. Might be some other kind of destructive termite or bug.

Could be flying ants which swarm like termites.

Yes, flying ants - that is what it looked like.
They didn't come back last night, so maybe it was just one of those fluke thing?
I asked my landlord about it and she said she didn't know what it was either, and she had some in her place - she just turned off the lights. She said she never seen them like that before.
One of the mystery of living on de island, I suppose.
I sure hope they don't return anytime soon!
Is there any prevention from Flying Ants in the future?
