Getting stuff in the mail
My mother has said that when we come down she will send us things in the mail. She buys everything in bulk! Things like cat litter, cat food, canned goods, electronics. You name it
Has anyone done this in the past. I was wondering if they scanned the mail for gift items and make you pay duties on them. Or if with pstage included if it would be less expensive to just get things down there instead of haveing to wait for the post.

I had a college roommate at the University of Michigan who was from California. Her mother insisted on mailing her lemons and avacados because she was convinced her daughter would be unable to find them in Ann Arbor, Michigan and/or that she could buy them cheaper.
Having your mother mail you these heavy, heavy items would be a waste of time and postage. You can buy all kinds of bulk items at Cost-U-Less, the grocery stores, and even KMart. Mom may occasionally be able to find a deal on electronics on the mainland that would be worth sending to you -- my Dad picked us up a DVD player for $24 after a rebate and mailed it to us at a cost far cheaper than we'd be able to buy one on island -- but that's going to be a once in a while situation.
My advice is to tell Mom to save the cost of postage and instead apply it to a plane ticket so she can come to visit you.

Unless your kitties eat specialised foods or you only buy organic, the cost of shipping would far outweigh any savings benefit.
