Getting Settled before Arriving
I am Canadian and I purchased a condo in St.Croix that I want to use as a rental property.
I have an US account in Canadian bank, so I don't have a routing number needed to write checks or receive money from renters in US currency.
Is there a Canadian that could advise me how to go about paying bills in St. Croix from Canada?
I tried to open a bank account in St. Croix when I was there in November, but changed my mind, after hearing about fraud at Scotiabank.
First time using forum.
I need to buy dining room table and chairs for my condo. Tried Amazon.com and other online websites, but even though they say they ship to St. Croix, when I go to Check out it says that they are not able to ship to my address.
It is a gated community.
Also I won't be there to pick it up, but I can ask somebody to do it for me at the resort.
Any suggestions?
What "fraud at Scotiabank"? That would have been my suggestion since they're a Canadian bank. I've banked with them for 30 years (well I banked with Barclays first and then Scoita took over when Barclays left the territory) and they're no better or worse than any other bank here.
i like bank of stx. certain amazon venders will not ship here. email them and ask them about it. sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. due to some boondogle, we are classified as international with fed ex, dhl and ups. and walmart and target and kohls.
if talking to them does not work, ship to paradise freight or vi cargo
When I was leaving the bank after I was told to come next day to finish opening my new account, I was told by my taxi driver that people are in line because their cards were compromised.
Thanks, I will try it.

It wasn't just Scotiabank which was affected, nor was it something which affected the USVI alone. It was a very sophisticated hack. Again, nothing to do with Scotia.
The Virgin Islands is outside the U.S. Customs area, because of whatever document gave VI duty free status. Though VI uses U.S. Customs forms, our duty rates are not the same.
That is why VI is considered international, I think. Many shippers don't want the hassle of non standard shipping. Our market is too small for most to make exceptions or educate their employees.
Also, furniture is too large to ship by post, etc. It has to in a container by ship.
I regret that I didn't open the account, I deal with Scotiabank in Canada for years.
I guess I got spooked because I was in St. Croix and not in Canada.
I know it happens everywhere.
Now I have problems paying bills because I don't have US bank. Maybe I call Scotiabank and since they met me in person, they may open the account.
Worth the try.
Thanks, I will try have the furniture shipped by Paradise freight or vi cargo.
