Getting Nervous

Hey guys, I've been reading the board off and on for a while now. I will be arriving on STT in December. I am planning on staying for the "season." I am getting nervous about finding a more long term place to stay (I have a temporary place lined up) and about finding a job to pay me enough to survive. I am also trying to figure out the car situation--definitely not shipping my down. So, what I am looking for is some information on how hard it will be to find a "safe" place to stay for several months (roommate or alone), how hard it will be to find a job for the same timeframe (I have no retail or service experience, but do have a Masters degree in applied math and analyst experience), and how much I should plan to spend on an "island" car for the duration of my stay. Any insight, suggestions, encouragement is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Needless worries, Amy. You will have no trouble finding a car for $1,500 that will be reliable, and an apartment in a safe area, whether it be alone, or with room-mates. The Island Trader has all you need. Call the Daily News and ask for "Circulation". They will mail you a Trader for $4. I don't see you using your degree for a seasonal job, but, get a Health Card at the hospital, and someone will hire you. Remember to get here before season really "kicks in", as jobs/apartments go quick before the end of November gets here. There will still be things to find, don't get me wrong, just not as many in December as in November. Come January, and all the jobs/apartments are filled for season.

Hello Amy,

You should be able to find work, apartment and used car. 😉 I agree with Marty that its not likely you'll be using your degree... even if you found a relevant job the employers aren't going to be to interested when they hear you are only on island for season. That said, retail is pretty easy to pick up unless you totally hate selling/sales and a lot of stores downtown hire extra salespeople during season. Keep doing your research and good luck.

Thank you both for your reassurances. I don't mind not necessarily using my degree-one of the reasons I am doing this is because I don't want to be an analyst anyway. I think I pretty much have everything lined up and ready to go. I arrive December 1st! Can't wait!

I am hoping there will be more "get togethers" once I am there. I would like to meet some of ya'll.

Thanks again!
