after spending the past nine months in breckenridge, colorado, the eight feet of snow we lived in finally used up our last nerve. so my boyfriend and i have fallen in love with our new goal of moving to the virgin islands. however, we are trying to decide if selling both our cars would be a wise move. although we could use the extra cash, would we be able to get around ok with out one? please if anyone can help our dilemma leave a few words of advice.

Not exactly. The terrain is hilly. The roads curvy and unnerving. It is advisable to have a car, unless you live near to where you work.The transportation system leaves alot to be desired. You could pick up a small car cheaply to get you around when you get here. Just ask around.

Perhaps sell one of your cars and keep the other. Or ship both and sell one here on island if you need the $$.
You do need a car though - its tough to get around otherwise. There are folks that make due with bus, $1 safaris, taxis, walking, getting rides with friends.... however its unnerving. At least one car would be good for you guys.

Something else you may want to consider. CO. isn't exactly near any shipping ports (ie Miami, New York etc.) So if you elected to take both cars, both must be driven to a shipping local. The drive from CO to Miami must be what, around 20 hours. So you and your boyfriend would both have to drive very long distances. Then, you mentioned the concern for $$$. Do bear in mind that shipping a car to the islands is a very good idea, like Islander and Ronnie said, because getting around is not easy, but it is not cheap either. You could expect to pay, depending on the size of your car $1500 as a very conservative estimate, while $2000+ is not beyond the rhelm of possibility. Now if you decide to take both, your expenditures are really getting up there. My suggestion, sell the one that you will realize a greater profit for, take the other to the island, and make do with one car. That is one car more than alot of islanders have.

Sell them both and get an island car here.
You will make a profit on the deal unless you have heavy loans on your cars.
I would only transport a jeep(or SUV) because cars arent the best thing on many parts of the islands, especially St. John. Two wheel drives dont manage wet hills very well and bottom out a lot.
